Tech questions for japanese cab owners *UPDATED*
« on: April 23, 2005, 12:18:24 am »
Hey guys, I just took some nyquil, so this might not make much sense, but here I go...

I got a chance to buy a Super Neo 29 Candy cabinet. The guy selling them said that these cabinets are Jamma based and that I should just hook up a J-Pac and go from there. Well I have a 2-player X-arcade stick I gutted and used the encoder in my dynamo cabinet. I was wondering if this would be a problem to just get rid of the jamma harness in the Neo 29 candy and plug in my X-arcade encoder. I wondering would this hinder getting power to the speakers, monitor and lights because I'm taking out the jamma harness? I'm not really sure how all this works, so any help would be appreciated. I just kinda need "know how" guide. Sorry like I said Nyquil...I'm trying to proof read, but this is like straight up alcohol.

Thanks,

-Ben

Trying to use your X-Arcade encoder is going to be more trouble than it is worth, buy a J-Pac. It will be easier, and won't require you to mess up a high dollar machine in order to use it.

You are going to make a lot of work for yourself, devalue and defunctionalize your machine all to try and save $50.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Well I have a good setup. I have a dreamcast adapter for the X-arcade. So what I do is, I have a serial switch box, which is easily lets me select my controls between Mame PC and Dreamcast with literally a flip of a switch. Also I have a VGA switch box, which lets me do the same for video.

I gotta agree with paigeoliver.  As soon as I picked up my Windy the first thing I did was order a J-PAC.  Save for having to wire directly into the speakers through a hacked pair of Altec-Lansing, it has taken care of everything.

When everything is finished setting up next week, I'll hack a VGA box for my DC and go the molex connector route for the controls.

OK, I've been doing a lot of reading and research on getting everything in this Candy cabinet hooked up. I made a little diagram of how I will connect the video stuff. That part is cake for me. Now I found a little interested piece of information, I don't know if this is new to you all or anything, but... I have some of these Creative Inspire 2.1 350. The amp outputs 4ohms and the arcade speakers output 8 ohms each. I searched google and found this quote in a forum:

"When you connect two 8 ohm speakers together in parallel it brings it down to 4 ohms.. You take the positive wires from 2 diff speakers and connect them to 1 of the positive connections on your amp, then you take the 2 negative wires from your speakers and connect them to 1 negative connection on your amp. And then you do the same for the second channel. So with a 2 channel 4 ohm amp you can hook up 2 sets of 2 8ohm speakers."

Also was included a site and a little program for ohm calculations. So it looks like I have sound covered as well as video connections.

Now controls, I'm not going to use a J-PAC. I don't want that advice. I already have a x-arcade encoder connected to a serial switchbox so I can with a flip of a switch go from PC to Dreamcast.

So again now I have sound, video and controls taken care of.

The last order of business is power. I need to know 2 things...

-Can a standard 120vac isolation transformer be used on the monitors in the candy cabinet (this is also referring to those with other Japanese style cabinets). I don't really know if because it's Japanese it uses another kind of transformer, or if it even requires one.

-How do I hook up marquee lights? Does this go through the power supply? I'm a little lost on this subject. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

I belive this is all that is left, thanks in advance. Below are some of the pictures I was talking about. My little doodle of a diagram I made at work and a picture of that ohm program set to 4ohms on the amp. :D

Here's an impedance calculator for you to use.

Impedance of each speaker / # of speakers = total load

So if I got 8 ohm speakers, and 6 of them hooked up in parallel, I get...

8 / 6 = 1.333 ohms
An ounce of image is worth a pound of performance.
