Playstation/MAME cabinet help
« on: November 23, 2002, 12:22:11 pm »
I have a cabinet with a playstation 2 in it, and the controls are based around a hacked a playstation pad that's wired to happ joysticks and buttons.

Now I'd like to add a PC to the cabinet for MAME games.

Is there a way to make my Playstation hacked-joystick control panel work with MAME games? Thank you for any help you can provide!!

Regards,
Mario  ???

All you need is a Playstation to USB converter.  I highly recommend the KiKi Joy (better and cheaper than the LevelSix ones).

You can actually get them for FREE after a mail in rebate at:

Can't beat that.

Forgive my stupid questions in advance: So I'll plug the output of my PS2 control panel into this USB converter, then the converter into the PC..........

But how will I control MAME games when it requires keystrokes? Will I be able to program MAME so that button x on the PS2 equals "tab" on the keyboard, for example? And what about keyboard functions that have to be controlled by the keyboard?  Thanks for your help!

There is a software for that too.

http://levelsix.com/download/USB_Driver.zip

? And what about keyboard functions that have to be controlled by the keyboard?

Nothing has to BE controlled by keyboard.you can program anything in mame to be used by the joystick/converter and whatever.

HAPPY now? :)

The usb adapter uses the standard Playstaion Joystick USB drvier (already comes with Windows 2000/XP).  So you don't need to download any software. To Windows it just looks like a very fancy joystick with two analog a 4-way digital "hat" control, and a bunch of buttons.  In Mame all you do is hit tab, go into the mame default or game settings and remap the buttons to the joystick controls.  Its that simple.

Hey

This only works if you use Mame32 because it's USB. If you are going through DOS mame, then you'll need to figure out USB drivers in DOS. It'll be tricky but the USB adapter is all included in the Win32 OS systems as a HID controller. You just enable Joystick in MAME32 and it's fine. I even have a separate config for NeoGeo for my PSX2 USB adapter.

Email me and I'll send you the KikiJoy configs that I wrote.

It would also work with the Windows command line version of MAME.
