RIP Arcadia 4/17/05 :(
« on: April 18, 2005, 08:53:01 am »
RIP Aracdia 4/17/05 :(  http://arcadia.gerety.net/gallery/
So I was moving yesterday, and loaded my cabinet into the Uhaul last.

When I opened it back up again, I noticed something didn't look right... I climbed up into the truck, to find that the floor of the cabinet had broken and shot up through the machine, the entire right side of the machine pulled out and separated from the rest of the cabinet.  All internal shelving broke and the motherboard snapped in half.  The case for the subwoofer got severely cracked, not sure if it's dead yet.  I'm sure the HD is probably screwed from the force of the impact.

I don't know what happened.  I drove EXTREMELY slowly, but it seems the one pothole we hit that I was really worried about actually did the damage.  The machine is totally and completely unfixable.

I absolutely will build a new one....  god knows when that'll get done, however :(.

So for now, no more cabinet for me.

 :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(

THAT SUCKS!

Did you take it apart to find out if anything is salvagable?

Hopefully its just a motherboard ($40?)  and a 4x8 and some paint.

But try buying a new motherboard and using the old processor / memory ect.  HOPEFULLY the only thing that broke was the motherboard (and thats pretty easy and cheap compared to the rest).  Harddrives park with their heads in a location they wont do damage if moved.  Hopefully the heads themselfs arent damamged.

Hows the monitor?

Good luck!

As for the costruction.... Yikes.  I have a feeling you will want to take it completely apart.... Hopefully its not a complete wash on that.

NipsMG,

That's sad news.  It looked great in the album.  I'm sure you invested a lot of time and money in that one.  Your description made it sound like one heck of a mess.  Do you have any pictures and/or advice for anyone else who might be moving their cabinets in a moving van?  Must have been one hell of a pothole.

I don't think I really secured the floor well enough when putting the castors on last year.   I'm going to try to take some pictures tonight of it pathetically leaning in my garage :(

I dont think youd have to rebuild completely do you? I guess i have to see the extent of the damage but hopefully you could just strip the cab and get it bare to begin reattaching a floor panel and redo your shelf bracing. Worst thing is you have to buy a new mobo but hopefully thats pretty much all the hardware you have to purchase. Good luck man, i hope you can work it out.

Man! Sorry to hear that.  Must have sent ice down your spine when you discovered it.

But I have a question.  From the pics it looks like you used particle board for the construction.  Is this true?

If so, it might be something for new builders to watch out for if they plan on moving the cabinet around much.

I feel for ya...

Yes, I used particle board.

BIG mistake.  If you plan on moving your cabinet EVER, do not use particle board.  Screws pull out too easily.

Yeah MDF is heavy, but it's better for contstruction (or plywood).

Man!!! that's sooooooo sad!!
I must beware then, I'm maming my cab @ my mothers house, then I'll have to move it to my apartment. Hmmm, my cab is a dynamo and it's made out of Particle Board. I hope I manage to bring it down to my apartment safely.  :-[

Yeah, you definitely CAN do better than I did w/ construction.  Lesson learned, next time I assemble I'll use a lot more glue and rely a lot less on screws to hold things together.

Since I have to get this thing into a finished basement down a staircase that platforms & does a 180 degree turn, I really needed this back into 2 pieces.  Now I've got it in 4 pieces :-D.

Well, the monitor was a POS to begin with.  IT's a 27" Television "Monitor" with a 9 pin RGB Connector, Coax, and Composite.  I was hoping the RGB connector would allow me to hook up an arcade VGA, but, alas, it's a TTL connector and only gives like 16 colors or something rediculous like that, so my connection was purely composite, and it looked like crap. Good enough to play some games, but overall, crap.

So this weekend I'm buying a reconditioned Wells Gardner 25" arcade monitor.  Next month, Son of Arcadia* will be built (note, that's a working name.  ;D)

Son of arcadia may be a Golden Tee Fore! style cabinet.. since I have a Golden Tee Fore! 2004 board arriving any day in the mail.

I have a dynamo ,when I got it looked like it had seen some very hard years but it's still as solid as a rock. I wouldn't worry about moving it at all.

that sucks dude.  question though...why did you keep everything in the cab during the move???  didnt think about it moving around?

Well, I actually had to make the UAII one piece to get it into the house I was living in previously.  The ceilings and duct work in the basement made it impossible to get it into the house vertically and the ceilings were too short to re-assemble it in the house also, so I had to screw into the sides to secure the tv's case to the cabinet (it had a wood framed case, fit perfectly inside, but wasn't secured down).  I had to lay the whole cabinet down on its back, with a square furniture dolly under the monitor part and wheel it into the room.

I didn't have time (or any help) to take it back apart before the move unfortunately.

so now I have an excuse to rebuild rebuild rebuild.  However I may be able to repair what I've got so I don't know exactly what I'm going to do yet.  We'll have to see.

(Although, I have to admit, I like the name "Son of Arcadia".  I think you should keep it.)
