Yes they re angled the Monitor. Moved it up much more than it was when it was a Galaxian.

yes i know never to fool with electronics of any kind while they
are plugged in. I know this much, because of computer experience.

Thanks for that saftey tip though!

Thanks RAY B.

I found the switch on top of the COMBATRIBE.

The top of it was broken off. So i used a pair of needle nose to cut it on.

The audio was real screeching sounding. So i cleaned the contacts on the

PCB.

Nintendo THEMSELVES didn't do the conversion, that plate came with the Vs. conversion kit (for Pac-Man series).

Next thing to do is to see if the Hogan's Alley cabinet will work when hooked up to the monitor in the Combattribes. Just put them back to back and unhook the monitor cable from the Hogan's Alley and plug that into the Combattribes monitor (if you are LUCKY then this will be plug and play, if the connectors are different then we will have to look up the monitor pinouts for you, or you can splice if all 5 wires are the same color (or likely 4 of them will be the same color and one will be different, same thing).

Excuse me for asking?

But where exactly is the monitor cable?

Like i said i don't know much about these machines?

Is it right on back of the tube?

that square looking chip thing?

Thanks for bearing with me   :)

The monitor is going to have two sets of wires running to it, one of them is OBVIOUSLY going to be the power wires (big and chunky, like a lamp cord), the other set is the signal wires, they should end in a plastic connector of some flavor that is plugged into the monitor boards.

Find THAT on both machines. Are they identical? If so then hook up the one from the Hogan's Alley to the other game and turn on both machines, and see if the Hogan's Alley picture is displayed on the other monitor. Then do the reverse (try the Combatribes on the Hogan's Alley monitor).

If the connectors are different then please take good pictures of both of them and we can talk you through testing them.

I repeat, you are looking for where the wires come up from lower in the game to the monitor, it will be on the monitor circuit board, the big one at the bottom of the monitor assembly, not the little square one that is butted up to the back of the tube.

Maybe, maybe not, depends on how it is set up. It isn't going to have a Nintendo monitor in a Galaxian cabinet. Anyway, if it had the Nintendo monitor and it was dead then he wouldn't get audio, this one must be set up for the g07 that is likely in there.

I am going to try the monitor hookup between the 2 cabinets later this week

when i have some time.  Time is tight at the beginning of the week.

2 Questions?  Can the COMBATRIBE play other JAMMA pcb's since it has

DYNAMO/JAMMA  printed on the head PCB connect harness?

And i noticed in the GALAXIAN/HOGANS ALLEY cabinet  there is a gold cage in the

bottom left of the cabinet. Could this be the GALAXIAN pcb?

Did they put them in cages like that?

I will keep you posted on the monitor situation..   ;)

Went and tinkered with the GALAXIAN/HOGAN cabinet for a little bit.

Didn't do the MONITOR trick though.

I did see that their hookups are different.

Just about every thing in the GALAXIAN/HOGAN cabinet has electrical tape on it.

Where they spliced into everything while converting it.

Everything is working except the MONITOR it just doesn't look like it

is getting any power. Plus i noticed that the Lamp cord you was speaking of

Which i believe is the main power cord? It even was cut and spliced + taped

back together.  When i get some more time i will check that out also to

see what that looks like?

With further investigation the PCB in the Gold cage i was talking about

was the HOGANS ALLEY pcb.  The GALAXIAN is gone.

You can slide about 3 Pcb's in it.  It has racks in it to hold Pcb's

The cabinet is hard to figure out? There is NINTENDO stuff in there + Left over

GALAXIAN stuff. It is hard to tell what the hell is wired to what?

I don't think the Monitor in it is a GALAXIAN monitor.

Simply because that LAMP CORD looking wire was cut and spliced.

Plus it looks to newer than the cabinet.

Ok, That is all the rambling for now.

Oh yeah can that COMBATRIBE i have play other JAMMA boards?

And what PIX do you wanna see   Ray B?

I will take them and post them.

Thanks everybody!    :)

If it does happen to be the monitor is shot.

How much would a good used replacement run me?

It looks to be 19 " and where could you find one?

thanks!

Neither one of those games is worth investing a NEW monitor in, so if we determine yours needs replacement, then go to google groups and post in the rec.games.video.arcade.marketplace newsgroup.

Post this

WTB: 19" monitor in (insert location here)

Hi, I am in need of a good working 19" monitor, I would prefer one local. I can pick it up, and will gladly trade in my non-working monitor towards it.

It should be around $50 or $75. More than $75 would be a rip off, especially if you are giving them your old broken monitor to repair.

You can also learn to repair your own monitors. I do sometimes, but USUALLY I only repair the ones that have SOME action, I usually just give the dead ones away to a buddy who enjoys monitor repair a bit more than I do.

Thanks for the Info.

Where can you learn about Monitor repair?

I know these Games aren't worth investing a NEW monitor in.

But i will probably keep these Cabinets. They are in good shape.

I will still need a Monitor in the GLAX/HOGAN cab for whatever i decide to do with

it?

If the Monitor is indeed shot.

Thanks!

Thing is, if you MAME the Galaxian then maybe it WOULD be worth investing in a new monitor. Happ's Vision Pro II is only $160... (assuming it's still on sale)

I really don't know what i am going to do with the Galaxian cabinet yet?

I would like to get the HOGAN'S ALLEY in it running.

Just for the thrill of getting it going!

Like i said you can hear the music,  Hear it Coin up , And even fire the gun off.

But no picture?

Like the Monitor is just dead. No power going to it.

Even the marquee bulbs light up.

Im not in that big of a hurry. So i will continue to tinker with it.

When time pemits ( SIGH )

Probably will even do the MONITOR trick that has been suggested.

Thanks for all you guys help and tips !

It has been very helpful !!

If the connectors are different then you will need to splice the wires, they SHOULD both have 5 wires. If you are lucky then they will be color coded in a logical manner which will allow you to figure out which one is which (one machine might have red, green, blue, black and brown, while the other might have white/red stripe, white/green stripe, white/blue stripe, black, and white).

Monitors normally have 5 wires going to them.
RED
GREEN
BLUE
ground
sync

If you can figure out the color wires on each monitor (they are often the same colors as the name, or have a stripe that color), once you figure out the color wires then you can simply try the other two wires both ways.

I had one machine once that had 5 white wires coming off the back of the monitor and I guessed my way through the whole thing!

Some monitors/machines have TWO sync wires. These have SIX wires instead of 5.

If you have SIX wires on BOTH monitors then follow the same idea.

If you have six on one and 5 on the OTHER then 2 wires get tied together, if you can figure out the colors then you can still do this by trial and error.

Okay here's what happened with your Monitor trick.

First i borrowed a tester from work and checked to see if there was

any power coming out of the lamp cord to the Monitor. And there was.

So next i used your trick. The Comabtribe had 5 wires going to the monitor.

And the Hogans Alley had 6 wires going to the monitor.

So i used your method and BAM! It worked.

Hogans alley showed up on the Combatribe Monitor.

I even dragged the gun over to it. And it fired and worked fine!

So i guess this tells me the HOGANS ALLEY monitor is shot?

Am i correct???

Thanks!

"Shot" might be overstating the problem. Could be as simple as a blown fuse, or the monitor is not being powered due to other reasons.

You might want to start a discussion in the Monitor forum, or ask Ken Layton to come check out this thread (you'll have to give him alot more details of what you see relating to the monitor).

What i meant by saying SHOT.

Is that it is beyond my capability of fixing it.

I am new to all this.  And it would be easier for me to get a replacement monitor

than to fry myself.

I am sure it probably is a easy fix for a veteran/pro.

But i will take this to the monitor section.

To see what happens.

Thanks RayB .

Ok here is another chapter in the ongoing GLAX/HOGANS ALLEY Cab situation.

Here's what i did yesterday.  I took Paige Oliver's advise and spliced the Hogan's

Alley into my Combatribe Cab's (working monitor) Wham! I add a instant picture of

Hogan's Alley playing in my Combatribe Cabinet.

So today i tried first using the power cord coming out of my Hogans' Alley Cabinet

to Power up the Combatribe (Working) Monitor.  Then i turned both Cabinets on.

And didn't get any picture on the Combatribe Monitor.

So i tested the HOGAN'S ALLEY Cord again for Voltage.

And sure enough there is Power coming out of it.

So then i plugged the Combatribe's Power cord into the Hogan's Alley

(BAD/DEAD ?)  Monitor.  Nothing there either?

So now im at a BRICK WALL.  I don't know if i have a (BAD/DEAD?) Monitor

in the Hogan's Alley cab or not?

I thought i did until i tried using it's power cord,  To power up the Combatribe

Monitor. If their was power coming out of that cord. Then why would it not

power up the Combatribe Monitor?

Very Frustrating!  >:(

Your Combatribe is in a Dynamo brand conversion kit cabinet.

The Hogan's Alley game is housed in a Galaxian cabinet and a game operator bought one of the Nintendo VS Unisystem conversion kits to fit Midway Pacman style cabinets. The kits were made for Pacman's wiring harness and Galaxian was slightly different so whoever did the conversion did what they could to get it working. Granted it looks like they could have (or more like should have) spent more time on making it more neater & professional what with all the electrical tape you say is in there. I did one of these in a Pacman we had about 15 years ago and it sure does come with a cardboard drilling template to relocate the monitor mounting barckets. If I remember correctly this kit also came with a genuine Nintendo "Popeye" style power supply and it had a seperate On-Off power switch that only affected the monitor!

Your picture shows a modern "peter Chou" style switching supply in the Hogans cab. That was never included in an original Nintendo conversion kit. It would have had a Nintendo Popeye power supply assembly which mounted to the brackets on the gameboard's metal cage. It appears your game cabinet has been hacked up from the original Nintendo kit. The kit was never intended for a Galaxian cabinet anyway---only for Pac & Ms. Pac cabinets.

It's been so long since I put this together I don't remember where the special power switch was put (I think it was on a bracket inside the cabinet near the transformers). Anyway, make surre all the cabinet (white) safety interlock switches are closed AND the power switch on top of the cabinet is turned on.

Today i hooked up the HOGAN cab's monitor power supply cord,

To my COMBATRIBE's monitor.  (which was still in the COMBATRIBE cab)

Made sure all 3 switches were turned on the HOGAN cab as suggested by

MonitorGuru.

And BAM !!! HOGAN'S ALLEY showed up on the COMBATRIBE monitor.

Then confirming that the HOGAN"S ALLEY monitor in the cab is BAD!

I just want to thank   PAIGE OLIVER,    RAY B,    KEN LAYTON   and   MONITORGURU

for all the help.

I really appreciate it!   :D

Great, well not GREAT, but at least we know your monitor doesn't work at the moment.

If learning monitor repair isn't your thing then simply make the post I suggested on RGVAC to get a working one.

Yeah ,  Monitor repair is a little too advanced for me right now  ;)

I can't wait to get another one though.

I actually stretched the gun over to the other cab.

And shot a few Bad guys!

It was great !

I want to also get some coin door lights for that coin door.

It has those OLD SCHOOL 25 cent icon's on it.

But they are transparent.

When i get them, Do i wire them to the 5 volt's and ground

on the power supply?

Does the coin door already have light sockets? If so then get the bulbs for them, they might already work. Most games I buy tend to have missing or burnt out bulbs down there, but they usually work with no modification if I just replace the bulbs.

Otherwise, if you use 5v bulbs then they go to +5 and ground, of 12V bulbs then they go to +12 and ground.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
