IR question

Hey I just have a quick question about infrared recievers.  What's the piece that goes in front of the receiver to prevent light?  Is that just tinted glass or tinted plastic or what?  Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's just colored plastic, but I've got a suggestion that might work for whatever you're doing.  I saw a project that someone did over at Xbox Scene, where he took the IR dongle that normally plugs into a controller port an permanently mounted it inside his Xbox, so that it would not take up a controller port.  Really cool.

Anyway, he drilled a small hole in the front of the xbox case to allow the IR light through, and he just covered it up with a piece of exposed film (I think he just taped it on from the inside).  It looked pretty good.

Exposed film.  Wow that sounds like the perfect idea!  Just before I go out and take a shot of nothing, any other ideas?

Do you have an old remote sitting around?  I dunno if they have Goodwill's in .ca, but if they have thrift stores, perhaps find some old thing and gank the darkened plastic from that?

It's only purpose is aesthetics.  Use a piece of tinted plex, sunglasses, or even glass for welder's goggles.

Okay thanks alot.  I didnt know it was for asthetics, but it's not ONLY.  It always helps if you cover it from light.  I think I might just go to goodwill in a few days and pick up a few things.  Thanks alot guys.
