Monkey Business
« on: April 06, 2005, 01:50:16 pm »
I picked up an IPAC about a year ago, in anticipation of building a cab.  Well, I've finally started and have been at it for about a month now - detailed progress can be found at http://www.teambadmonkey.com/howto/mame.php.  I'll post updates here as they happen.  Artwork has been started, and I'll post it shortly in the Artwork Forum with the subject Monkey Business.  Please provide any and all criticism/advice.

Thats an incredibly well built cab. Just by the few pictures you posted on your website, I can tell that you've got a few years experience in wood working, judging by your use of wood dowels and glue/screw assembly method. You dont see that in normal first-timer cabs.

Very well done!

I also routered my corners round and created the exact same setup for the marquee (removable top piece to allow glass to slide in)

I also screwed into the side of the cabinet and then filled the screws,

Although yours looks to be done with a bit more grace then mine.

Very nice finish on it.

sanded the first coat last night - got some of the priming done for the back pieces.  any ideas on how to get a nice, smooth final coat using oil-based paint?  roller type? light sanding with high grit paper?

If you have access to a compressor and a steady hand, I'd say shoot it. It you dont, pick up a few cans of whatever color you want and get a spray handle kit for it. The'd be the easiest. Just dont go crazy with the paint. As I'm sure you know, spraypaint can be an excellent tool, but the end result will look like crap if you dont take your time.  ;)

Are you KIDDING ME?  The fence on that table saw alone costs more than most folks pay for their table saws!  Only bad part was ordering the t-molding from Rockler...they seem pricey on most everything they sell, but the bad part is if you're looking for it, they prolly sell it ::)

Also, most first time cab builders don't have a cabinet saw, that phat ass miter saw, the big ass compressor, or the quality clamps he's got.....heck, he's even got a cheap table saw as a BACKUP!...I think I may have even seen a planer!

With those two compressors you've got, if you don't ALREADY have an HVLP gun, pick one up and use that to finish the paint job.  You've got enough tools there that if you're perfectionist enough, you could prolly go to the trouble of wet-sanding to get a SWEET finish!

Nice site, too...easy to follow!   Is your cabinet saw a Jet?

Cab looks great.

Bought the Ipac a year ago but once you dove in looks like you are hitting it pretty hard.

Why did you round over the edges if you are using T-Molding?

If you want a really smooth paint job go to an auto paint supply store and ask for 1Shot paint.

Drew:  well i gotta admit, it's not my garage :(  had i done this, i'd have done it with a crappy circular saw and knocked it out in a weekend.  but it wouldn't be near as nice as it is.  my neighbor's the one with the skillz - man, you probably won't see any seams when this thing is done.

PDMO:  I bought the t-molding assuming that's what I'd use.  But plans changed, and well, now I'm not.  But I do have it for sale/trade in the other forum - I'm looking to get a coin door...

as far as final coat, i'm not sure.  i bet the auto paint is expensive - i'd need at least a quart.  but maybe that'd be cheaper than getting a paint gun.

we've got a few people in the neighborhood queuing up to build one now.  :)

Monkey,

It's really signpainters paint more than automotive paint. http://www.1shot.com/Lettering.html  The automotive paint store
is just the best place for you to find it.  You can brush it on and when it flows out you won't see any brush marks just like you sprayed it.  About $30 for a quart.

Monkey,

What area of the country are you in?

Just double checked with a sign supplier & they quoted me $39.99 for a quart.  This stuff goes a long way.  As the name implies one coat is usually all it takes.

If you check your area for a sign supply warehouse they may sell to you direct.
