Lot's O Questions on ADVMAME to Performance
« on: November 07, 2002, 10:50:38 am »
Hello,  I have a ton of questions here.  If anyone can answer any of these, I will be most grateful.  Thanks in advance.

System: AMD 1.8XP, 256 MB, Sound Blaster 16 PCI, ATI Radeon VE Dual Display Ed video card

Questions:
1) Advmame and Mame both have performance issues.  In Pacman I get a good 60 fps, but in games like Metal Slug 2 or World Class Bowling I get 20 FPS.  I have changed the Sound Sample Rate down to 22050.  Why is it so slow?  Is it because I only have 256M of memory?

2) Where can the advcab example files be found? (ie standard.rc ntsc.rc vbe.rc) I have downloaded ADVCAB and ADVMAME but they were not found.

3) If I have a ATI card, do I have to run VBE /L for advmame?

4) Where can I find ANSI.SYS?  I am using Windows 98SE Pure Dos.  I have tried many ANSI.SYS, but I get the error "Device Not Supported for the Version"

5) What Mode do you like using for displaying Dos?

6) Mame has no problems displaying games Neo-Geo games.  Advmame cannot display them through all there modes.  Is this because I did not setup advmame properly?
Or is it because I need to set up VBE?

7) I noticed during the setup(advv), some of the VGA modes displayed in dual screen. (IE top part was the grid. the Bottom was just black with the white lines pointing
towards the center)  Is this normal?

Thanks!

this probably belongs in the software board....

but... are you trying to run advmame dos version in a dos window or true DOS?

If you're in windows, did you download the windows version...

If in windows have you tried the -nosleep or advance mame equivalent switch?

those are just my initial thoughts... it's also possible you are using a pig of a video mode one of the uber-scan line settings or something... which can suck cycle time.  just for giggles try disabling scanlines.

good luck,

rampy

I am running PURE DOS.  IE I boot to dos, no windows. I do not use scan lines since I am using an arcade monitor.

Answered some questions:
2) Where can the advcab example files be found? (ie standard.rc ntsc.rc vbe.rc) I have downloaded ADVCAB and ADVMAME but they were not found.
A) Make sure you download the sourceforge version. It has a direcotry named doc where all doc is located.

3) If I have a ATI card, do I have to run VBE /L for advmame?
A) ATi is not supported by VBE.  It is not needed.

6) Mame has no problems displaying games Neo-Geo games.  Advmame cannot display them through all there modes.  Is this because I did not setup advmame properly?
Or is it because I need to set up VBE?
A) You need to run advcfg and advv completely.

7) I noticed during the setup(advv), some of the VGA modes displayed in dual screen. (IE top part was the grid. the Bottom was just black with the white lines pointing
towards the center)  Is this normal?
A) You can't use this these modes if that are not displayed correctly.

I had  similar issue...

I set up a racing cab to run pure DOS. When using the CTMousep driver I got the same kind of problems. Any time I would spin the steering wheel, the games would drag and frame skip like mad, ie: pole position, etc.  >:(

I opted to install the basic microsoft dos mouse driver instead of the ctmouse one. Since I did that, I haven't had any problems at all. zero frameskip.

Sounds odd but that turned out to be the culprit in my case.

Word.

I fixed all my problems from above.  I bought a Trident T64 Blade and works great.  I reccommend it for arcade monitors.
