No Sound with DOS Mame - Soundcard???
« on: November 09, 2002, 03:09:07 pm »
I started running the software for my MAME system.  I'm currently using ARCADEOS for my front-end and running DOS Mame.  The problem is that sound works perfectly for ARCADEOS, but I get no sound when a game starts running in DOS MAME.  I even tried running games in MAME (without launching from ARCADEOS) using command line:  dmame mspacman -soundcard 1  but I get no sound.

Here are my system specifications:

500 MHZ Pentium IV running latest DOS
Latest version of DOS Mame
Sound Blaster 16 PCI sound card

Could it be that this particular sound card isn't supported by MAME???

I'm at wits end right now as I've exhausted all other options.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks

I think I just answered my question:

I just found this on the internet:

"Sound Blaster's 16 PCI works perfectly with every release of MAME I have tested, including all DOS frontends like ArcadeOS, however, it is a total pain in the rear to setup correctly!!! The DOS driver by default uses IRQ 7, and configuring it to use IRQ 5 is real trick. If you do get this card, save yourself hours of headaches and just download the drivers from this website. Unlike the Ensoniq Audio PCI, this card is easy to find online and at the stores. They are usually available at www.newegg.com. "

So i guess i'll just have to get the drivers and try it from there.

If anyone else has had problems with this card, and knows EXACTLY how to configure it, let me know.

Thanks

Hace you taken a look at any of the drivers on Fraggal's Mame boot disk / set up disk?

I'm pretty sure it'll set up dos PCI drivers. Here's a quote from the readme:

things it does now:
install dos 7.0
arcadeos
advmame-aos 61.1
sound blaster drivers isa and pci
sound blaster live
and sets up your moritor of your choice
MP3 support in arcadeos with mpxplay

Good luck!

Yes, I did use Fraggal's Boot Cd but although sound works fine in ArcadeOS, it does not work with AdvMame or DMAME.

Seems that the Sound Blaster 16 PCI is one of those more difficult cards to get working.

Check the FAQ at www.mame.net.  The fraggal boot disk did not help me with the correct settings for a SB PCI board.  Use this instead:

SET BLASTER=A220 I7  T2

This worked for me.

Yes, I did try doing this as well.  In both cases, the PCI interrupt for the card was set to IRQ 10 and the Sound Blaster 16 Emulation was set to IRQ 5 which seems correct to me.

Anyways, I bought a Sound Blaster 16 ISA card from ebay for $9.00 so i'll just use that instead.  I don't have the time or patience to deal with this sound card crap right now.

You shoudnt have this much problems with the SB16 PCI.  I have the same card here running practically the same setup as you.  Did you try and use 7?

Yes, I did use IRQ 7 as you stated in your previous email, but still nothing.
Oh well . . . back to finishing my control panel - i'll worry about software later.

For sh*ts and grins....  Take a look at your bios and see if they have parms that deal with PCI.  You might find something.
