These were designed with the PS/2 model trackball in mind.  The controller is very fast and no "backspinning" or other ill-effects were experienced as a result of this modification.  Only a vast improvement in speed and precision.

Use of this modification in the Imperial Trackball model supplied without an interface cannot be tested.

There are many different controllers this model can be interfaced to and success is based on the the speed of those controllers.  All methods will show a precision increase, but backspinning" may be experienced while spinning rapidly on a trackball connected to a slow controller.

Results of different interface methods will be tracked here as they become available.

I've been thinking about getting one of these myself (I already have the trackball).

I have a 3" Betson PS/2 trackball, and I don't experience any of the problmes that you are talking about.

The movement from mine is very smooth and I can move the cursor from one side of the screen to the other without removing my finger from the ball.

I have not used mine yet, but Erik has a point...if it ain't broke, don't fix it?  Hmmm.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in...

I've got a Beston trackball, and had no problems whatsoever with it.  Then I read a few posts about Randy's encoder replacement wheels, and thought I'd give it a shot.  I gotta say, the difference is night and day between the old plastic wheels that came with the trackball, and the new ones.   There's considerably less spin needed to get across the screen.   

If you're happy with what you've got, then I say stick with what you got.  But for 10 bucks, it's worth giving it a test.  Plus Randy's a good guy to deal with :-)
