Starblade?

GREAT old game, I saw a while back that it was starting to be emulated, but then I haven't heard anymore.  Does anybody have any current info on that one?

A post ripped from another message board:
----
Namco System 21

There is a preliminary WIP driver in MAME. However, I do not think it is playable.

It is a complex system. It uses 2 68000s, a 6809, 5 TMS320c15s, and some other complex HW, and to make matters slower runs at high-res. This is the same HW as Cybersled and Suzuka 8 Hours. There is also some protection too.

This will need a very fast system to run it when it is emulated.

You'd probably get a more informative response in the MAME forums.

actually I doubt he'll get a more informative answer than the one you gave dink... they'll most likely (if they are feeling nice) give him links to the unemulated mame sites or unmamed sites =P

A halfway solution is to get the original Starblade/Cybersled for playstation 1 and use psxemu, connectix virtual playstation or any other psx emulator on your PC. I've got them both and they work perfect. Starblade uses a pre-rendered movie for the background, so I think it would be difficult to emulate.

yes the wip driver is what I read about as well.  From what I read it made it sound like it was playable, pity if it isn't.  If they can make todays graphic cards do some of the work, I would imagine the flat color filled polygons of this game shouldn't be that hard to run fast.

yeah... but that's HLE style emulatioin and MAME general doesn't go that route... maybe if someone looked at the WIP driver and made a standalone we'd be in luck... it's looks like a pretty cool game...

yep, I haven't got the ROMS yet.  Anybody tried this out?  How well does it run?  What system are you running it on?

Just tried it today. Excellent emulation. The graphics are just like the arcade. There's just one problem though: the original game used a pre-rendered movie for the backgrounds and the real-time action was in sync with the movie. So with this mame version you only have the real-time action, but no backgrounds. Although perfectly playable, it is kinda weird looking at torpedoes coming out of nowhere or hangar doors floating in space.
