Cab collectors - How not to injure yourself?

<< < (4/8) > >>

RayB:
No, I don't have anyone I can get to come over and help. Imoved around alot in my life, and so have most of my good friends.

I like the idea of putting a mattress at the bottom.  ;D

DrewKaree:
Something I've seen professional movers use - a big honkin' belt/strap similar to the kind that should be on your appliance dolly.

They make a big loop of it, and hook it around themselves to use the rest of their body as a counterweight.

I just tried helping move a freezer using that technique.  The thing would be heavy as all get out for two guys to lift from the ground, I could get it up 4 steps by myself with just the straps, and it wasn't difficult at all.  The freezer's weight, however, wouldn't allow the maneuvering all the way up and around the corner.

We're contemplating taking a sawzall to it.  Has anyone ever cut a line on a freezer (the one that holds refrigerant)?  We were told a small hole would let the air out and possibly some of the "black goo" inside.....kinda skeered.  Me, I'm looking forward to it! ;D

HaRuMaN:
I cut the line on an air-conditioner once before.  If you have to do it, do it and RUN.  You don't want to breathing that crap (and freezing your lungs).

RayB,

I'm 43.  I avoid pain by using my brain. Better equipment, or pay somebody.  Use floor moving pads to push games around. They call them "moving men".  Get some carpet pieces to help you slide them.  By all means, don't try and lift them yourself or by yourself.

Going down stairs is a dangerous proposition by yourself.  make a piece of plywood and attach carpet behind it with staple gun.  Lay the machine down on it and then pull it down the stairs.  Stay in front of it and take your time.

But if you can, make new friends that can help, because there will be some you can't move at all by yourself.

menace:
I have permission to install a removeable block and tackle set into our next house--I told her its so i can lug the washer/dryer/freezer into the basement too  ;)

This way i can put the machine on a dolly, hook it up and lower it down the stairs.  Just have to make sure I attach it to a stud (other than me  :D)
