New D9200 and Color Purity

Hey all!

As I've stated in one of these posts here, I replaced my WG7131 with a D9200, mainly due to color purity problems  in the top right hand corner that I just could not correct (and would bother me for some time).  I'll be using the old monitor in a new cabinet eventually, but I figure I'll muck around with it for the time being.

That being said, amazingly, the D9200 has a slight color purity problem in the same spot.  Now, there is no magnetic field in the vicinity that could be causing this, so my assumption is that this is just how it came to me.  Seems to fade in the upper right hand corner.

Now, I see that a purity magnet (chevron) was placed on the tube in the same quadrant...I'm wondering if this could be causing some of the problem, or if I need to put more magnets in the area to fix it.  Also, where would I pick up the purity magnets without a TV repair shop nearby?  I've tried the refrigerator magnet strips, but they didn't seem to help with the 7131 unless I put the whole roll in a corner.   

Overall, I'm really happy with the monitor as I'm blown away by the clarity of some of the old games compared to the 7131.  I just want to tweak this so it doesn't bug the crap out of me every time I look at it.

try your new monitor out of your cab for a day or so.

You might have a stray field in there somewhere..



(I had one cab one time that had a steel brace behind the monitor bracket that had become magnetized.)

With all the work to get it INTO my cab, lord knows I never want to take it OUT of my cab.

 

I appreciate the feedback.  I should have tested the monitor beforehand, as I took it out of the box and let it sit in the basement for a whole week while I readied the cab.

Sometimes you need to manually degauss a brand new monitor right out of the box. Since you say the new one has the problem in the same spot then you either have some magnetic field being generated in the cabinet (like a speaker magnet or fluorescent light ballast or magnetised part) or there's a magnetic field near your cabinet (stero speakers, subwoofer, fan motor, heater, etc).

I wish that were the case.  This cabinet was literally gutted and doesn't have speakers where they belong.  Pretty much straight wood.  And no external influences...this is in an unfinished basement with nothing around...

But, I'll look through it again.  Maybe the ballast...dunno....

Water pipe, heating duct sheet metal, etc. might be a problem.

Are monitors really that sensitive that something so subtle can screw things up?

Yes, color monitors (as well as color tv sets) are sensitive to any magnetic field. Even the earth's magnetic field can do it. Black and white monitors are not affected.

Yes...With one monitor I had, everytime the kitchen light upstairs was on (and only that one) there was discoloration in one corner.  I think it had to do with the dimmer installed for the switch.

I was aware of issues with magnetism and monitors but I thought it took a reasonably strong force to have any impact. I was planning on putting my cab just a few feet away from an air conditioner. I am starting to wonder now if this is asking for trouble.

Sometimes I think the alignment of the moon affects mine...seriously.
Some days perfect color...others there is a small area of impurity.

Water pipes are PVC, heating ducts at least 8 feet away.

gonna take some time and look at it tomorrow.  If anything, may be the marquee lighting.

Black and white monitors are not affected.

This is false.  I used to use my magnetic screwdrivers to mess around with the POS systems at Circuit City all the time.  Sometimes it'd mess 'em up real bad 'til we turned the thing on and off a couple times to "degauss" it.

Follow-up:

After keeping the monitor on for an entire week and not touching the system, the color purity problem has diminished considerably.  It's not completely gone, but now there's no red seen on the upper right of a blue screen.  It's just a tad darker now.

Looks like it really needed a burn in period....
