Hmmm... all of a sudden I've got 50 invites too. Why don't they just let people sign up for themselves? Every geek on the planet must have at least one gmail account by now.

Me too, and they moved them.  They keep moving the invites every time the change how they do the invites.  Probably part of the experiment.
