any interest in getting parts cut on a cnc?
« on: January 20, 2005, 09:10:43 pm »
I work for a commercial cabinet company in st. louis as a draftsman and programmer for there cnc router. I thought I might be able to make some extra cash cutting parts for people. If anyone would be interested in getting complete sheets up to a 5' x 10' or just control panels cut let me know. This may not be as cheap as doing it by hand but trust me the results are alot better. If your interested let me know I can show you some pics of some of my stuff and give quotes.

Il post some pics tommorow. so far the only arcade things I have cut have been my own control panel variations. I still cant decide what layout I like. Heres some more info. The router we use is a 3 axis meaning x, y, & z axises so I can cut any hole and make any depth/size pockets for joysticks the only thing I can not do is things requiring a 5 axis machine. So I cannot do miters, we usually just cut these parts about a inch bigger and cut the miter on the saw. If someone were to get me specific sizes they want there parts cut I can draw and program them and they will come out perfect. I already have lucids cab programmed, as I was going to do it myself.
As far as materials we have 3/4" MDF, 3/4" particle board, and 3/4" particle board with black melamine on both sides. all of these in 4'x8' sheets. We also can get other materials they are just not in stock.

I did find this on my computer. It doesnt have anything to do with arcade cabinets, but it shows some of what the router can do. This was cut on two 5'x10' sheets of mdf. It took about 1/2 hour to program and 15 min. a sheet to cut

We have a CNC at school, which is pretty cool. Could you possibly send me the files for one of those control panels? So I could load them up on my schools CNC and make one for myself. If you could that'd be great, and I promise that I won't use any of the machining for profit. E-mail me at jpanichella@gmail.com if you could hook me up, much appreciated.

The programs are in MasterCam v9 If this is what you guys use you will still most likely have to change the tool settings for your machine. If you guys use something different I could just send you the autocad files and you could convert it to what ever you use. If you do know how to use autocad or mastercam than you probably could just draw one. Mine is nothing special and it only took 15 min to draw, and im not going to use it for my final one. But I dont have problems sending them to you, just let me know if you have mastercam.

Just the other day I was wondering if anybody on BYOAC did this for other members.  There is some other thread I'm following that has pictures of a CNC cutting some panels (maybe the Pac-Man cab thread?) and I thought "hey, that'd be neat if I knew somebody with one of those machines"

What would the cost be like?  I assume that shipping would kill the 'deal' factor for a full cab, but what about things like a CP?  What would it cost to have you cut some basic CP shapes? (no button holes needed)

that would be interesting if someone was doing a full cab too.  Would save on the priming/painting/covering aspects.

well I dont have any pics of any of the big control panels I have done (there in the garage) but here is a 1 player panel I was going to use to make a dreamcast controler with. I was bored at work one day and I thought it would be a great project, by the time I got home that  night I had already lost interest. It does however show the black melamine on particle board. Its like a thin laminate. It also shows how clean the router cuts. The picture doesnt realy show it but the panel also angles inward and has a radius at the front.
As far as pricing I will check and see what the material would cost me, I get it at cost so that wouldnt be to bad, Ill find out monday, and as far as the complexity of the design or number of holes thats not really a issue as long as I get a good dimensioned sketch.

Would you be able to do the miter cuts for the trim as a secondary operation? I have been looking for someone to make a new top for my control panel (6 button conversion from a 3 button with misalinged holes), but I haven't been able to find anyone that can do the entire operation for a reasonable price. Either that, or they can't cut the matching lexan/plexiglas overlay.

Here is what I am looking to have cut if you want to take a look:

http://mouse.pouncingkitten.com/arcade/cp.pdf (can be converted to dxf)

The MDF would be 3/4" thick while the lexan/plexiglas would be 1/8" thick. The drawing doesn't show the 1" fillets on each of the outer corners.

Im not to sure about the plexi, but I dont see why not. I was going to try it on my cab when I get to that point.

Yes I could cut a complete cab out of black melamine. The price would depend on the number of sheets and how much drawing would be involved. I would be able to cut all pieces, the only thing I could not do would be miters in wich I could make those parts larger so you could cut the miter. Just give me a Idea of what it is and how many sheets it would take and I could give you a price on mon. or tue. Are you Local?

Most cab plans dont take more than 3 full sheets.
