Operation Wolf gun

Actually, I have seen worse.  You do have an upgraded unit.  As you can see the geared motor has a rubber grommet the original had a steel gear.  So that is a plus.  You don't have to worry about chewed up gears.  If you have a problem you just have to change the rubber grommet.  As far as the sensor board the only way to test it is on a full working Op Wolf Game or replace with a new sensor board.  You are missing the base of the unit.  I am an old school coin-op guy so as far as getting it to work on Mame I have no clue.  As far as it working mechanically I have all the parts you need.

If I did it using the 'BYO steering wheel method', would I calibrate it with the joystick calibration wizard in the control panel? (Im using win 2K). I assume i would, but its good to confirm.

Yes, correct.  In my experience I found that using a Gameport > USB converter works much better than just straight to the Gameport (in XP anyway).  Better as in less 'jumpy', and better calibration after restarting.

You could also hack a Dual Strike (www.1uparcade.com) which is already USB...

How hard is that? Do I have to remove anything to do this? Or just clean it up? It need some repainting. What kind of paint do you think I should use?

Sorry to ask a million questions. Its just I really want to be able to get this going. Are you able to post a pic of the base of the unit?

anybody ever figure anything out on this?  I'm also trying to convert an optical gun (Mechanized Attack) to position gun.  It seems that the mechanical part of the guns are very similar.  I'm guessing that the first positional guns were simply modified versions of the old lightguns and I've also heard of conversion kits for converting optical to mechanical...but I've never seen one.  What would really be nice is mechanical drawings or high res pics of the pots how they are mounted.. are the geared some how?

1) Gut the Op Wolf Cab, and install a PC with external monitor/Mame (have to flip the image due to the mirror)
2) Buy an AimTrak
3) design and 3D print a mount for the end of the Op Wolf gun in which you can install the AimTrak.

You have to run the AimTrak USB cable through the gun handle which is a little tricky, and we couldn't get the recoil to work, but once you get the lighting right in the room, it works pretty darn well.

If anyone is interested, I can take some pics and/or video.

Also if you take this route, use MAME 0.179 or newer because OPERATION WOLF DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY IN OLDER VERSIONS

long story short, an unprotected prototype showed up a while back

emulating the prototype revealed what was missing from the protection simulation on the original game and how it was meant to work.
the protection simulation for the original sets was then improved (a couple of months later) so the original game now functions correctly in MAME.

the protection still isn't *emulated* (that will come the day we work out how to extract the code from the C-Chips) but at least the simulation is accurate now, and the various ingame events trigger as they should.  The game simply won't play right at all with older versions where the simulation was based on a bootleg instead.

Yes, I heard the news!  Very impressive find, and thanks to you and others for the efforts--the hostage at the end of stage 2 never survived when I was a kid playing this in the arcade, and it was disappointing that confrontation didn't come across in the emulation.

How would I go about getting the romset for this?  I still do have the original PCB and roms for my machine even though I gutted it--had the classic problem of couldn't get the shots to register on-screen, and I'm no electrical engineer.
