Rip flash programs off the internet?
« on: December 21, 2004, 01:46:31 pm »
Is there a way to rip flash files off the internet?  I found a game I would like to play on my "internet-less" second computer.  I WILL NOT distribute the file and only want to use it for personal gaming.

Using Mozilla:

View, Page Info.
Click "media" tab.
Scroll down all the various media items on the page until you find the .swf file.
Save as.

---------

Or, you can use Mozilla to just save the page that the flash program is on.

One way I've been able to do it:

View the source for the page that has the file you want to save.  Find the path in the source to the .swf file and copy it into an html editor, and make a link with that path as the target.  When you load the page, you can right-click on the link and Save As...

There might be easier ways to do it...that's just something I found that works.

That will only work if the flash file isn't dependent on some other file(s).  Looks like this one is, from your results.

If the main swf looks for a particular file in a relative path, and you knew what that path/file was that it was looking for, and you could download that file, then yes.  But since you can't see the source of the swf file, you don't have any of that info.

Unless someone knows a way to decompile the swf, I would say the ultimate answer is no.
