Does this constitute a computer?

Tailgunner:

Do OEM processors come with a heatsink/fan? If not you'll need one.

Other thing I'd suggest is to hold off on the soundcard for now. That motherboard has a good audio chipset on it, and plenty of speaker connections for a cab project.

paigeoliver:

I agree, I don't buy soundcards for mame cabinets if the already have onboard sound. No point to it, mame doesn't have 3D audio and even the cheapest onboard sound can handle the hyper simple 8 bit and 16 bit sounds of old arcade games.

Whiz bang sound cards are mostly for 3D audio, or for the (entirely overlooked), incredible midi capabilities of some of them.

Snarbald:

Spend the extra couple of bucks to get the retail processor that comes with the heatsink/fan.

Maybe this is just me but I would go with an abit or asus motherboard instead of going with a no name board. A couple extra bucks now could save you from frying everything later.

What brand of powersupply does that case come with? If its a deer or something, see if you can order the case with out the supply for less so you can get one that doesn't suck.

i have a PCCHIPS in my mame machine, runs perfect for what it is..

think about it, its a MAME machine..

as for "retail" GO OEM and get a "better" heatsink and fan, because a cabinet GETS HOT and that better cooling will do you go anyways..

keep the 512 ram imo, it is "just" a mame machine, but your also talking about XP, and running larger roms.. dunno, my upgrade from 256 to 512 helped tons of performance issues..

HD is all preferance.. if i had a choice right now, id have at least a 80gig or bigger.. hell mame roms alone (complete set including chds and such) is over 30gigs by itself.. tack on NES, and Music, and any other stuff you want and thatll fill up fast..

Tell you what.  Tell me what your budget is, I'll work around a computer that will work within your specs.  Then, send me the money and I'll purchase the parts, assemble and test them.  Yes, I'll want a small piece of the pie, but it'll be assembled correctly and tested.  Then I'll ship it via UPS wherever you want.
