Need information/instructions on building custom Mame arcade joystick

Hi all,
I'm a newbie (man I hate bein a newbie).  Anyhow, I'm totally obsessed with building a mame cabinet, unfortunately I can't afford it just yet, so I thought I would start out building my own custom controller.  
Can anyone suggest websites, etc.. that show you step by step how to make controllers and wire them to work with a pc?  I need all the info I can get.  I'll be using the controller with Mame32 and my pc.  
I also need advice on what to include on my controller...I want to play all the mame arcade classics so what do you recommend I include?  Trackball?  Flight stick?  or just the standard joystick and buttons?  I want the ultimage universal stick!!!  Thanks!
