OT: Galaga Cocktail Pics
« on: September 17, 2002, 08:56:24 am »
Does anyone have / know a link to some good pictures of Galaga cocktail machines?

I have just won one on ebay :), and I'd like to see/know if anything is missing/not original.

It has the controls on the 'longer' sides rather than on the ends btw.

Also btw, I'm not MAMEing it so dont worry  :D

It's a pacman cocktail.  I think there are pics at mamefans.com (goto english site, click on museum)

What makes you say it's a Pacman machine?  The Pacman pics at mamefans do not look like this one.  It doesn't look like the Galaga one either, although I know a different type exists.  The machine (on mamefans) that it resembles most is the Space Invaders one.

Thanks for pointing me to mamefans btw, I hadn't realised that section was there :)

Then it isn't an original cabinet.  Midway/Namco use that pacman style cabinet.  Look at the new Ms Pacman/Galaga combo cocktail cabinet that was just released.
The galaga at mamefans is the original.
Here, another one to prove my point.
http://www.homearcades.com/Galaga%20Cocktail%20Table.htm

If it uses the space invaders style table it's a conversion.
Oh duh, I didn't read your original post completely, I should have known it wasn't an original

Original Pacman and Galaga cocktail cabinets were narrower (on the coin door side) than MsPacman ones (single slot coin doors) per the pics I've seen.

Also, the Pacman/Galaga control panels are shorter (vertically), not as deep (from your stomach to the monitor) but wider (left/right) than Ms.Pacman ones.

Also the woodgrain pattern seems to be more of knotty pine (e.g. larger stripes, knotholes, lighter) than the woodgrain normally seen on MsPacman ones, which is usually dark walnut and thin woodgrain stripes.

But that's just what I've seen over time browsing, not to say they didn't have manufacturing variances in production of them.

Right, like I said, the pacman and galaga table are the same table.

Thanks for your help :)

Just take a look at this flyer tho, it shows more the type I am talking about:

http://www.coinop.org/kb_dl.html/KB/GfxMame/Flyers/galaga.png

But I'm sure it's not that one, so I would expect it is a conversion as you say.

Cheers

Minwah --

That is very similar to an Atari Asteroids cocktail table. (Or also similar to a Donkey Kong/DKJR cocktail).

The ad is a Japenese ad, so perhaps that was the table they used there, or was advertizing conversion packages (though Asteroids was a 13" monochrome vector monitor, not a 19" color raster, so doubt they would do that conversion!)

mamefan has a point, they could have used a different cabinet in other contries, because that upright in that pic isn't quite right to.

OK, I am in England btw.  I have just been at www.arcadewarehouse.com > video games > table machines.

They have Galaxian UK and USA tables - the UK one is similar to the table I'm describing, the USA one is like the Pacman one you're refering to.  Perhaps the same thing was the case with Galaga tables ?

Just a note... an original galaga cocktail model was recently released for 3darcade.  It was based off of the authors personal cab, scratches and all.  You might want to look at it.
