arcadevga and resolutions

big daddy:

ok, so I have my arcadevga card and a betson imperial multi-synch monitor.  I want to make sure the games are all running at the resolutions that they're supposed to with that monitor.

I downloaded the avres utility off the ultimar site and ran it.  It put ini files in my mame/ini directory for each game and set a resolution that I understand to be the best match of a resolution that the arcadevga supports compared to what's documented in mame. (FYI - I selected the option in that util where the only options I allowed it to choose from where those that supported 60MHz refresh rates..not sure if that was a good thing or not)

Anyway, now I can run the games (all run without any problems) and I think they all look good.  So my question is, is that it?  Is the resolutions that the avres utility suggested the best match of the resolutions that my monitor supports?  Or are there some games that the mame documentation is wrong or the avres utility may just get incorrect?  If so, does anyone have a list of those that are different.

Like I said, I think it looks good, but when I first booted Simpsons without running the avres util,  I was "blown away" by how it looks and now after running the avres utility I'm not really "blown away" and I don't know if that's because the avres utility may have not setup something correctly or if it was just the initial "awe" factor that has since worn off after playing several games  :)  (don't get me wrong, it still looks great, I just didn't have that awe feeling after the resolution settings.)

DYNAGOD:

i too had some mixed results with the res tool.
the tool sets the games for their closest to original settings, but the fact of the matter is ,you and i and everyone else are not running on original hardware. so those settings are not necessarily the best for us..
if ive learned anything so far....
the best res tool you have are your own two eyes
:)

Minwah:

It is possible the tool may not always pick the best (tho I have no reason to believe it would not)...

Try temporarily renaming your simpsons.ini to something else, and run again - see if you can tell the difference.  You could try my Res. Tool from my site if you like - not saying it is better but it gives a more visual idea of what resolutions are being picked.

Dynagod: To some extent you are right (eg displaying vert games on a horz screen or vice versa), but most people using these tools *are* using original hardware, effectively anyway (ie 15khz screen) - so in theory the nearest res. to native will be the best.  Of course there are some exceptions, like medium res. games...

DYNAGOD:

as i stated in another thread about  the Res tool, my problems are more than likely a result of operator error, not the programs selections.
ive found that on every game i play, if i go into custom game options and force 60hz ,disable hardware stretch and lock all the syncs, i get a much brighter and superior image than the res tool alone.

How exactly do you force 60hz and lock all the syncs? Do I do that in the mame.ini file?

Thanks,
