Any MAMErs in AZ?
« on: September 12, 2004, 09:11:13 pm »
Hey guys-
Looking for others in AZ that have an Arcade style MAME setup. I am interested in building one myself, but would love to see someone else's before I go down this long, expensive path!  I'd also like to compare notes and network with someone close to me. Anyone from AZ out there that has a MAME setup?
Thanks
D

Hey dude!  Nice to meet you! Can you tell me more about your projects you have done or have going?  I'd love to stop by and see them sometime, if that'd be alright. Shoot me an email off list and we can discuss.
Thanks!

I live in PHX....43rd Ave. and Cactus.  I have a LuSiD based cab, but I haven't been able to work on it for a while. Damnit if work got in the way.  >:(  Been working on a modular panel design for LuSiD's cab and telenguard's modular design.

Been playing around with a rotating panel with the 3rd panel being modular as well....but allot of redunant stuff going with this plan.

Way behind the curve on Mame and stuff....there is a tombstone burner locally though...so you can get a complete set if you don't have one already  ;D

I'm actually moving into a townhouse this week..so for the first time I'll have my very own garage..woo hoo, means I can actually do some more work on my cabinet and not have to rely on other people's space (apartments are not very condusive to cabinet building)  :)

I live on 91st Ave and Peoria...  I'm just starting to build by first cab...  I'm basing it off of the Mortal Kombat style...  I'm using a SUN 24" widescreen monitor in it...  I'm trying to design it so that I can play Mame (arcade) games as well as PC games...

I'm still in the design phase, even though I have almost everything to get started.

Hey guys-
Any of you want to organize and meet up say, on the weekend for a little bit?  We can chat about plans, who's done what or is building what, etc. Maybe someone would even want to open up their home to us to check out the machine, if that's not too weird? I don't know- just a thought.  Otherwise, maybe at a pizza joint or something here centrally located?  Let me know and I'll set it up.
Thanks!

Hey eyal8r,

I'm up for that, but my schedule is pretty busy for September (since I'm in Tucson, I'd have to make the drive up to there..which isn't a problem, just currently in the middle of a move).  But keep me posted on whatever you guys decide and I'll do my best to be there.

We could do something at my place, I've got plenty of room and a bunch of original machines to check out too... I'm around cooper/octillio..

Couldn't do it until 2nd week of October.  I'll be out of commission the next couple of weeks and out of town on business the week after that.

Just a rundown on what I have to show off  ;D

Dedicated: Star Wars, Tron, Xybots, Viper, Paperboy, QBert, Marble Madness, Roadblasters and Xevious.

Mame Projects:
2 Minipac Style 4ft tall cabs (one horizonal one vertical)

Gauntlet cab in the process of being MAMEd (was a very dead vball conversion)

Pole Position cab being MAMEd (got it empty)

A couple Firefoxes with no boards/laserdisk... I have a few ideas on how those might go... I'd love for a pcb/laser player/disc to fall from the sky, but barring that...

An asteron belt converted to choplifter I received dead, i've done some work on it but don't know what it will end up being yet

Also have an empty Super Sprint cab I've been accumulating wheels for (already have pedals, I think my Paperboy was once a Super Sprint and has driving pedals still).

Maybe we can make some patterns from some of these, Gauntlet is a classic 4-player layout... and I like the smallish size of Q*bert as a model for a dedicated vertical cab...

So we can make it a hell of a party...for geeks.

no website yet, but guess I ought to do one sometime!

I'll try to do something next week.  I haven't setup a proper game room yet but the dining room is doing nicely right now.

I had my tonsils removed today and it hurts.  Allot.   So mostly I am eating vicodin and ice cream and sleeping.  (And no, I'm not 6, I'm 32, so I'm coming a little late to this game and will pay the price over the next couple of weeks).

I'm adding a couple of machines in the next couple of weeks too, a 720 and a Blasteroids.

I have an addiction, and I need help.  Just not right now  ;D

Hey owj, where did you get your empty cabs that you are converting to MAME?  I have looked high and low.  I found only one place "Rishon Distributing" that would even sell any kind of empty cabinet.  They just didn't want to sell one that I wanted...  ;)

I live out in Scottsdale, about 104th St and Shea.

I am all for meeting up and doing some group builds.

I am also into Radio Control trucks and planes.

So far I have a 2 8way joysticks, 1 4way joystick, and 20 buttons, plus a coindoor. I was thinking of ordering up a blue translucent trackball as well, but I am probably going to wait a couple of weeks days.

Does anyone know where I can get a set of luminated buttons like the ones used on the old Asteroid machines? If not I have a buddy with a CNC machine, maybe he can make something that looks like it if I can find the dimentions of the originals.

He's a local retailer that sells new/used arcade parts. I've bought my spinners, steering wheels, trackball, leafswitch buttons, ect.

Rishon Distributing
602-254-4376

Al- Owner
Dave- Owner's Son
Manny- Lead Tech

Tell them Phil reffered you..  He also sells used cabs and whatnot. Good guy, pretty much the only new/used parts guy around here..give him a buzz.

I'm still very interested, however I can't for the next two weekends, I'm on pager duty and need to be close to work if necessary (since I have to drive up from Tucson, don't think I'd make my 30 minute window)  ;), but I'm up for anytime after that...just let me know.

I am in the Phoenix West Side.

My first cab got ripped off, but it was pretty funny.
It was a mock-up of a game that didn't exist. I did my own art for "L.A. Riot" on an Operation Wolf cab.

That was funny enough, but I did my own flash screensaver that ran when the machine was idle, that matched the cab.

Guess you had to be there.....

I am working on two at once now. Another positional gun conversion, and the other one the ever-popular CP of many colors, projects. (Joystics, spinner, trackball, etc...)

Well, I am still up for getting together. My mother moved back into town and I can always drop my kid off there for some grandma time.

I have totally expanded my list of parts, and I am almost complete minus some t-molding, Keywiz max 1.5 and a router to cut the wood out with.

I have a flatsceen Sanyo 24" Stero TV with s-video in and 2 sets of RCA inputs as well.  I have it up on Layaway at Walmart till the 15th. (payday) and it was on sale for $188.  I would love to see a few other cabs for building ideas. I am better at putting pre-fab stuff together, but I don't like the way presswood falls apart.  Has anyone use some nicer finished type of plywood for their machines in order to make them last longer?

I hope not! I am almost all set here. I have my new key encoder on its way as we speak.  That should be the last piece that I need outside of the wood, lexan & hardware. My 24" TV will be picked up tommorow as well. Today I picked up a router from Lowes, it came with 25 bits, and totaled out to $75 with the tax. It would be ashame if it was only used on my cabinet.

Funny you mention this. I have been taking care of business and other projects, but now getting ready to start in on my own cabinet. So- let's do a get together- preferably somewhere central where there's a couple machines for us to check out and play with. Any volunteers?  I would, but, I have never built a machine yet! LOL...  I'm in- who else?
Thanks!

I'm in too, just let me know where and when and I'll see what I can do.  Since I need to come up from Tucson, if any other Tucsonians need a lift just let me know and we can arrange something (assuming of course that I can make it on the day we have scheduled)  ;)

bump and also a cry for help!!!

First off- are we EVER going to all get together?  I think it's a great idea. I'll have to go back through the post, but I'm pretty sure we've had a few guys volunteer to host- and shoot, I'll pitch in for pizza or something as well!

ok- now here's where I beg...  I am soo lost on installing MAME Analog+ it's not even funny. I got the cab built, will be hooking up all my controls and drilling CP holes tomorrow- wiring, etc. For the most part, I'm about ready. Silly me, I had this idea in my head that I just download MAME Analog+, hit the install button, and it runs like an XP OS Install or something. LOL.  Apparently, it's not like that at all. I'm not completely computer illiterate, but, this stuff just isn't clicking. I also haven't found crap for documentation. I need like a MAME Analog+ Install for Dummies book or something. LOL.  Can any of you local guys help me out?  Even if it's a quick phone call to set me straight, or, I'll buy us lunch if someone has the guts to come help me out themselves.

If there's any kind souls out there who can help me, I'd certainly appreciate it!

ok- cry from help from fellow MAMER is over...
Thanks!
D

In the spirit of the never-scheduled get together, all of their skeletons are propped up in front of MAME'd Time Killers machine.

LOL Tok, I want to see a picture of that!

Welcome back!

I am sure you guys at this point have worked on your projects, post some pics & specs!

At this point I need to mount up holsters for the light guns, and create a couple of more control panels. I am set up so that the panels are removable by just lifting them up. It was the only way to not have a Frankenstein control panel board. The next control panel will be one for a trackball, followed by another one for a spinner and flight yoke, and one more for a steering wheel and shifter. Seems I will need to order up some more key encoders to be able to get it done and I'll probably go with a couple GP-Wiz40-Eco USB Controls Interface boards to make it easy and cost effective. Also I want to upgrade the computer some, that AMD 2000 is running it fine, but not sure if it will hang with some of the higher end games. Some of them like Teken is running slow, maybe I just need a ram increase.

Damn, I hate reading through half a thread like this and find out it's years old. Anyways, I wasn't on the board back then. And, there have been  two SoAZ arcade gatherings in the last three years.

I know, but I was looking to reach out to the group. It would have been just as crazy had I sent out a PM to everyone in the thread and no one would have known but me. For a while there it looked like we were all going to get together. None the less it was good to hear back from a few people at least.

Nice I am glad that I spoke up. Maybe we can help out a few of the guys who are earlier in their builds.

The Greater Phoenix Metro area seems to be what would be central.  I am in Scottsdale and not to sure where everyone else is.

Most here are in Phoenix. Those back then who weren't apparently haven't been active in years. Goz and Boz have been out for spell, too. Haven't seen Zero_Hour in a while, either.
