Hi all!

Im new here and have recently completed the first of a small batch of scratch built tabletops .The design should be familiar to most aussies. its based on early 80's 20" hankin tabletop.

I have a crude website under construction, but at the moment more pics can be seen at www.users.on.net/~mmem

with all that CP width i'm surprised you put one 1 joystick and 2 buttons on it.

could try squeezing a 2 1/4" trackball on there for some Centipede action

and another joystick on there for some Robotron and crazy climber

Cab i s vertical screen only and has about 50 classics on it.
(advancemame/menu - dos)
I wanted to keep as close to the originial design as possible.
I also think in some cases too many buttons/controls can intimidate those not arcade orientated..ie wifes,little kids, mums etc (seriously not wishing to start a debate)
track ball would be nice but centipede plays well enough with 8way for now.

Also, I have a cocktail which is pre-drilled for 2 buttons (plus start) I wish it only had 1, personally. Name like three really good classic verticals with more than one button, opps.... wait, don't. No debating!

Nice one, I looove Hankins... so solid. Great to see someone build one ( or two or three... ) from scratch & from looking at those pics, build them really really well! This style & the style of the one that I restored/customised ( http://wwwhomepages.ihug.com.au/~simons3 ) pretty much covers all the cocktails that were around here in OZ, I'd like to have the set! I you're not planning on making them on mass, have you considered selling/posting just the plans?

thanks mate! My plans and drawing are seriously fragmented at the moment, I found an original cab in a melbourne pub.with camera & ruler in hand, In I march and snap away. (hearing muffled questions to bartender - Whats that --missioncontrol-- doin over there?)

As mention plans are scattered oved 20 or so tattered pieces of paper. one day in the future I will organize better and publish... but seriously snowed under at the moment.

All I can say is fantastic!

And all I can do is further encourage you to sell or post, or as you see fit, the dimensions of that cabinet, as even though the US style of cocktail is well documented for construction, there was from memory only one good website that gave dimensions to the style of table top you have there.

Out of curiousity which pub in Melbourne?

It may take afew weeks as wife (and baby) has severely cut my garage schedule.
BTW pub was normandy hotel, clifton hill. unsure if cab is still there. Pics were taken 12 months ago.

WOW!

I'm so impressed, that is one sensational job. This is just what I want, but have no room, tools, knowledge or time to even attempt building. It would match the other old Aussie upright I'm restoring to a tea.

It's a million times better than this load of crap someone has been flogging on ebay forever:

...and more "classic" for Aussies than the upcoming Ozstick cocktail which is based on the common US style (haven't ever seen a real one of those here) which can be found here:

Plus, what I love, is that the panel isn't mounted vertically into the side of the cabinet which can give you very, very sore wrists after playing Galaga and the like! Unfortunately about 90% of our cocktails I've ever come across are like that.

Soooooo, if you ever consider making another or if somebody pulls out please keep me in mind for first chance to buy. I am definately getting a cocktail and this is like my dream cabinet.

I'd be over the moon if you could just sell me the cab without CP cut, I could customise that on my own, even order my own glass and you could leave it empty altogether so I'd handle selecting and mounting the monitor too

Starting to see how much I dig your work yet?

and yes, what are ozstick doing selling the US style?
your glass clips are great! i realised after i made mine that really they should look something like what youve made, but im happy with mine (cant be bothered making new ones anyway!).

actually, i should start putting links to more 'aussie' style cabs on my site. helps give more resources so 'strines' arent tempted into building yank cabs

Hey I think your cabinet is great.

Yes it is great to see Aussie cab's being built. Very well done.... I like where your CP is positioned, makes for more comfy gameplay. I have an Aussie Gaplus (Galaga3) cocktail cabinet and the CP is lower and you can get sore wrists after playing.

Of course the perfect addition for cocktail cabinets are those "Tam Tam Stools"...... I bought 2X white Caroma stools for my cab from Bunnings Hardware store $22 ea just a few months ago. We still have an original green Caroma stool from the 80's.... and the Bunnings stools are exactly the same. The two white stools look perfect with a retro cocktail cabinet....

Control panels are made from 2 pieces of 1mm steel, 1 folded & 1 flat (the very underside) .
On the original hankin design the CP is hinged along the front uderside. if you undo screws under the top edge the whole CP pivots out from the cab (like a giant clam) exposing controls and wiring.
I got lazy at the end and skipped the hinge.
It is powder coated in textured black. very robust and easy to clean.
BTW powder coating isnt all that expensive. most place have a minimum work cost. in my case $30. so 1 Piece = $30 or 10 pcs=$30.
I know I will new paint any metalwork again.

Are the control panels bent sheet metal?

I've restored an LAI cocktail here http://www.users.on.net/~bradandpam/cocktail/index.html

and also thought the old vertical CP's were a pain. My CP's are very bulky and I'm looking to replace with slimline similar to yours.

I'm also gearing up to make a few cocktails in the next few weeks when I start holidays, based on the cab I restored.

That will depend on how many pavers I lay and other "job" the wife has for me!

the CPs are folded steel.
Even if you have no experience with sheet metal its not too tricky.
some large trade plumbing stores have workshops out back with metal work equipment you can pay to use..my place is $15per 1/2hr.
the manual guillotine is easy to use , electric ones look scary but still easy to use.
same with folding equipment.
If youve never used either maybe go in and watch someone for a bit .
When you do it yourself you can get EXACTLY what you want, and you know you arent getting ripped off.

I think it is funny you guys call them Aussie style cabs, when they are properly Japanese style cabinets.

My favorite kind is the one Centuri used to use, it had the control panel at a 45 degree angle, which was nice.

It's probably because it's the only style of cocktail we really saw down here. It's definately the only style I remember seeing, and I'm 30yrs old.

So most of us equate that style with being Aussie.

You guys get the Japanese style monitors too. 14" and 20" models. We never saw those in the US except for on early imported Sega machines. All our stuff was 13" and 19".

hehe. so you see, we're always '1' up on you guys (",) . for the record, i always refer to them as 'aussie' style to show that it's not an exclusive thing. after all, i'm pretty sure the guy i got the dimensions from was in the states...

edit: but now i know, i think i will refer to them as japanese(aussie) style...

Paige, Atari "Missile Command" cocktail and possibly others in the US used 14" monitors that were "custom" made for Atari (Atari's words, not mine). Check the MC Cocktail manual. States it right there under "new parts" section. (The monitors were made by either Sanyo or Matsushita).

I picked mine up around 7+ years ago before the mame craze too off. Infact it was the old dos System8 emulator (with no sound) that supported wonder boy deluxe and pitfall 2 that made me buy it. Played it, relived the memories.... thought it would be cool to own one.... so I search around, and with luck found a machine in excellent knick.

I recently mame'd the cabinet, and had it converted to Jamma in the process. Still have the original bootleg wonder boy PCB that I bought with it.

Back in the day, the cabinet cost me $600 AUD (or so), and the PCB was $50.

Same thing though the same dealer now goes for alot more thanks to the home arcade craze mame as started.

But yeah, I'm very impressed with your replica! Great job!

Im on annual leave in 2 weeks and will be reacquainting with my garage after a 1 year spell.

Hi All!

Here is some updated pics.
All the woodworking/metalwork is now done and its time to fit out the insides.
I'm beginning to think this project is more ambitious than the scoresby freeway (which will probably be finished before me)
Anyways, 2 down 3 to go...

BTW- I havent forgot the plans, but I'm going to wait untill I'm on the last cab, this way they won't be rushed.

Also its great to see so many other aussie cocktails on the go!

it's good to see your doing well on the projects im very impressed

Altho i think u should use Gamelauncher but thats my personal preference

I love the woodwork u did very nice

It's a shame the cocktails are getting rare now i've seen hardly any and arcade shops are starting to sell them at like $500 now

You should make 2 more empty shells and sell them on on ebay or some guys here.

I don't like the type as mentioned before that ozstick and some guy on email has been hocking off for $500 for just a CAB

I hope u release the blueprints for this as soon there will be no more cocktails in aus besides us mame/arcade people

Great thread...The Hankin Cocktails in my opinion are one of the best produced very solid..large...and quite easy to work on for a cocktail. I live in Australia (Tasmania) and caught onto the Mame thing about five years ago with err *cough* Mac Mame. Limited back then I was over the moon. And then the itch developed grabbed a cheap usb joystick hacked it to a "Tank Arcade Joystick" (great for newbies if you can get hold of one genuine arcade parts in metal box) Joy oh joy SuperGalaxians was back and in my house. So to cut a long story short I found a few cocktails tables around and five years later have two working one sold three pinballs and an original MortalKombat II. Whew.. And can now do basic monitor repairs.. So back to the Hankins.. I have posted a couple picks of the cocktails cabs I have ( sorry for the low quality photo's ) If anyone is interested I will post better ones and more info. One is an original Donkey Kong (not mamed of course) and the other was a generic chassis which I rewired for jamma arcade monitor ..Jpac and running about 1000 Vertical games.. notice the painted DK control panel wish the artwork was in better condition.

Hi Guys!

Ive been busy moving house for the last 2 months...man have i got some crap! my garage had more stuff than in my house. It may sound cool to have 4 uprights and 4 tabletops, but when its time to move its a pain in the @#$

The stuff i have been throwing away would make some of you guys weep!

Well the Hankin cabs were distributed by "Leisure & Allied Industries" which I think are still around. I can also remember seeing a Hankin Pinball on the net too! I haven't come across any of these on international web pages so I presume the cabinets were made, assembled in Australia and boards,instructions,monitors came in a kit etc which

Care to share in rough dimensions off your original baby? I have noticed a lot of interest from both myself and others in trying to find something to work with.

Certainly it would tie in well with you suggesting not to work off an original, but build your own from scractch.

No Problem, I wish I had built one form scratch in hindsight. My friends and family have all the tools and skills to help me. I was just too impatient at the time (4 years or so ago now)

I tell you what, if you send me/post a sketch/pic indicating what dimensions you want on it I will fill in the blanks and pass it on..
