Non-emulated games that are great in an a cabinet
« on: August 23, 2002, 01:22:46 pm »
As an idea.... I was wondering what games are worth looking into adding to a cabinet.

Some fighting games got ported... but most of those are emulated (and I don't see a reason to run a port when I have the original).

but the robot fighting game (forgot name)

Golf games?  Any good ones that you can use well with a cabinet (especially ones that use joysticks only)

Black and white I want when I redo my trackball... Seems like the 1 player would be fun... don't know about the motion spells.

Any other ideas?

There used to be a game in 1995 or 96 called "Crusader no Remorse", and the sequal "Crusader no Regret".  Both were dos games, both used the keyboard/joystick for movement.
Also the new breakout game from Atari.  It is keyboard/joystick too, and 3d which might be interesting.

I also thought about using keymouse with Diablo/Diablo2 which would be kicking on a cabinet.

The crusader games are great but they arent suited well for a cabinet.  First off they require a mouse too, in a rather odd method that might not translate well to a trackball.  Secondly the text on those games is tiny tiny tiny, and it's crucial that you can read it to solve puzzles, so unless your using a vga monitor your s.o.l.

Btw I LOVE these games, I just realized a long time ago that they wouldn't work for an arcade cab.

ELITE.

Really bad game for a cabinet due to all the keys required.  But such an awesome game I might have a keyboard available in my cab purely for this game.  ;D

BTW I know it's emulated on various systems.  Just thought it was worth a mention :)

Yeah unfortunately this goes back to my original theory that the only games worth playing on arcade controls are arcade games.  Gee why does this make sense to me but no one else? ;)

Actually there are a lot of arcade simulations for the pc that will work great on a cabinet though....   The microsoft pinball games are great, there are some fantasy pinball games (dont' look like a real table, more like a video game) that also translate well.  I won't bother mentioning the arcade collections as it would be retarded to run them when you can run the actual games on mame.  So basically pinball games work well and maybe an oddball fps, although personally I can't play them without the trusty mouse and keyboard.

I enjoy dxball, it is like arkanoid...with some twists.  I like MK4, NFL Blitz 2K, Big Race USA Pinball, and Karaoke (not a game...but fun at parties).

I have recently stumbled upon a pc version of Dance Dance Revolution.  I plan to buy a floorpad and install it as well....my daughter can get some exercise playing then....and maybe I can get Stompin' to play the way it was meant to be...whew!, I worked up the sweat playing that one!
Oh, the memories of living on pizza subs and Dr Pepper...

I can't believe I forgot about mk4.... It's the truest arcade port I've ever seen... it even has the inferior textures like the arcade does instead of upgrading them like they didi for the n64 version. ;)

Oh and be srue to check out the ddr simulators.... dance with intensity and stepmania.  What's good about these two is you can add your own songs and steps to them.  I personally don't care for most of the techno crap they throw on those games.

Since most of the players on my cabinet are my daughter's friends (8-10 year old girls), I've put Happyland Adventures in the cabinet (http://www.freelunchdesign.com/happyland.shtml), which is a freeware non-violent platformer.  It's actually pretty addictive!

I used the older, non-Xmas version which I don't think is available any more.  The Xmas one can load custom maps, but requires a mouse to do so (the ONLY part of the game to require a mouse) which is a stopper for me.

The only time I run into a problem with Happyland Adventures is when I get a high score, as the high score expects true keyboard input, so all of my high scores have blank names.

The other non-MAME games in my cabinet are the old Epicenter versions of Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.  (My cabinet is DOS-based; if I was running Windows, I'd be running DAPHNE for these games...)

One thing I thougth would be cool after i get my trackball working again.

Diablo and Diablo 2 might be really cool on a cabinet... plus might add something new with the trackball.

will ahve to try them out

Hey, How about Doom/Doom 2 Etc.  Not too many buttons, or high level graphics?

I don't remember... are Doom II's buttons remappable?

I can just see people networking cabinets now for deathmatch... :)

I was having fun playing Unreal Tournament over the internet on my cab the other day...  Except I didn't use the arcade controls...  I had a mouse and a keyboard, and I sat in front of the cabinet in a chair, with tables to my left and right to rest the mouse/keyboard upon.  I was envisioning some kind of throne - maybe an elevated lay-z-boy with something built into the arm rests for using a numeric keypad and a mouse.  It would be awesome...  The game really looks good on a big 25' arcade monitor, and I imagine newer games would be fun that way as well.  That would cover the 1st person shooters (and take up a LOT of space).

Heck, maybe a steering wheel could be attached to this throne also for driving games in style.

how does the PC version of blitz work with a cabinet control panel?  That would be a great one to add!

Anyone finding a way to play 1st person shooters with trackball? some kind of thumb button for mouse maybe? I tried renegade the other day and it kind of sucks to stand still while I reach over to the left and right mouse buttons - which are as close to the 3" high ball as possible.
just curious if anyone found an easy, simple way like a little thumb and forefinger pad switch or something.

Yeah... play them on a keyboard/mouse as they were intended to be played.  Some games just aren't suited for arcade controls, period.  It's the same reason that your favorite console games don't have a keyboard for a controller.

As for 1st person shooters..

I was considering creating a control panel of them that has a mouse sticking out (drill a whole and put just the wire through) then have all the buttons that seem apropriate.

seems like it would work well and look cool.  I just need to find a cheap all black mouse.
