St Louis SuperAuction? Anyone?
« on: August 01, 2004, 10:05:50 pm »
Hey everybody,

I'm seriously considering going to the "St. Louis" auction
in Belleville IL on the 7th of August.  I'm just wondering if
anyone else will be going?
I've never been to something like this, and don't even know
what time to get there really.  Their site seems ... sparse.
Any advice besides bring cash?

Thanks,

Matt

Get there early if your going to buy, the line to get signed up and get registered to bid can be quite long.  Also the last auction I went to they had maybe 250 arcade games, and if you are thinking of buying, the more time the better so you can play test them.  Also at the last one they took credit cards so I don't think you have to have cash.

Also don't get caught up in the excitement and overpay for a POS,  and inspect the hell out of what you want.  Plus, don't believe the auctioneers when they tell you a game is perfectly working and was owned by a little old lady from Pasadena and been in storage at its life.  :)

Other than that enjoy it and plan on being there for a good 4-5 hours.

Hey STL_Steve,

I'm still on college time where 10 or 11 is early.
What time do you mean when you say early?

Early means, look at their website and be there when the doors open.

I will be there.

I will mostly be looking for dead black and white games and a pac cabinet (although I may be getting a pac cabinet pre-auction from someone, other pre-auction deals I should have are another Gorf, another Atari Basketball and a 30" monitor).

My best advice is this. Forget the first row of games they sell, they will be going at ebay price, the later games will be more reasonable.

I found the same with the slot machines they sell too, the first ones go for crazy money, then you can pick them up pretty cheap.

Also, people in the general St. Louis area, remember this, my basement is darn near a mini warehouse raid by itself, as I drag home any free or dirt cheap game or cabinet I can find, and I am usually willing to sell stuff that is down there. That is provided you don't waste my time like one BYOAC member who will remain nameless who I made special arrangements to get home in time for him to look at stuff, and then he no showed (and I stayed home all evening waiting), or another BYOAC member who agreed to buy a machine, requested modifications, I made them, and then he no-showed on the pickup date and then promptly vanished from the board and stopped answering my emails.

And don't forget to look out for 'Do rag' You wont miss him there, he looks like mario, smells like dead fish, and bids the games up you really want.  Usually 8:30 is a good time to get there. By 10, the line to get a number is long.
I'll be there looking for anything good (80's games)
Funny thing, I saw them pulling some games out of the Iowa 80 truck stop today, will be interesting to see if they end up in St Louis

PaigeOliver,

I may be looking to contact you re: empty cabinets
and the purchase of said cabinets, if nothing happens
saturday.
And I can't find a time on superauctions website, so I'll
just get there by 8... hehe riiiiight.

And Brogner, I've read a few posts about DO RAG,
and will be on the lookout.  If he starts screwing up
bids (especially on a D&D game) I'll stab him in the
face with a soldering iron.  (I'm Joe Dirt!)

All the big time sellers shill their own games. Like, just don't pay too much, ya know.

I am not even sure if I WANT to know how you could mess up a transformer, but yes, I guess I would sell one, since I am combining my two machines to make one really good one, and both my transformers are fine.

Would you want to pick the transformer up, or would I be shipping it?

I was trying to pull the transformer out when one of the wires popped off, touched another terminal, blew fuse, replaced that, and now it is kicking out 120 volts where it should be kicking 16. Figured something is messed up.  How much are you looking at?  I will be at auction

ok, $20, will see you there, I will be wearing a black "maustang ranch" tshirt.  Peale,  I had the power on to test the transformer.  For some reason  I wasn't getting 16 volts at the board.  I was afraid of "accidently" shorting  the test probe out and still did just that.  A slight brain fart on my part

Oooh,
Let me know what's there.
I'm going to drag myself there, and I want to at least
come back with an empty cabinet,
functioning trackball, and / or maybe a 4 player coin door.
Who knows what tomorrow holds.

NOTICE: My buddy and I started construction on
my Ultimate Arcade II wannabe cabinet.
Should be assembled  within 30 days assuming
everything goes right

Ok, just got back. I didn't really LOOK at the pins, but they were definitely there, and there were definitely some Williams ones, a wrestling one, and an EM Bingo type one.

As far as games go, people looking for cabinets should be in good shape, as there are tons of CRAP games there, many of them in big monster cabinets. I saw probably 6 deluxe cabinets that were missing stuff.

The usual common high dollar stuff was there in the usual number (Williams games, Pacs, Galagas and Kongs). Noticed a dedicated Bump N Jump, a niceish Gyruss, a Star Rider (laserdisc), and a few other oddballs. Saw the same Great 1000 Mile Rally in a Pole Position cockpit that I have seen at the last 3 auctions I have been to.

I bought a really clean Jamma cabinet (High Impact Football in a redone Xybots cabinet) off the back of a truck for $100 while I was there. That way neither me nor the seller had to pay any fees on it.

Any idea on number of pin's? The last auction only had like 15 pin's total.  I am kinda interested if they are going to be lean this time around.

Thanks!

The pins did not make it all the way to the snack bar. There were probably more than 15 there already. More stuff will certainly show up in the morning.

Do note though that I did not even look at the pins. All of this is remembered from looking at the vids.

Here is one of my new games.

I also picked up this cocktail.

It is absolutely huge. To get a sense of the scale realize that you play it standing up.

Has a monitor in it and it has 3 tiny trackballs, unsure of the ball size, but they are smaller than Centipede that much I know for sure.

What controls does your Uo Poko board use? I think the MAME version says an 8-way joystick and 3 buttons, but when I play it it only seems to use down joystick and no buttons. The game seems to expect up joystick to continue but MAME uses the player start button.

The game uses an 8-way and no buttons. It uses the start button for continuing and for selecting your initials. It would also play equally well with a 4-way, or even with a single button.

I believe the graphic you are actually seeing is showing you to hold up to cancel continuing.

You have no idea how much trouble I went through to get that board.

Mame probably shows 3 buttons because the hardware supports 3 buttons and the test mode probably does too.

ALso, the High Impact was supposed to have a sound problem (operator I bought it from who was unloading poor earners said it did), that sound problem ended up being the fact that the volume pot was turned all the way down.

To those of you who went;

I find that I'm anti-social, so you wouldn't have met me ;)
I did attend though, and bought that V'Ball game
for $160.  It's got a Jamma Harness, so am I correct in assuuming
I could buy Jamma compatible PCBs with 2 buttons per player
and use them in the cab?
The cab's in kind of bad shape, and I may just use it as a simple
template to rebuild the cab.

I didn't talk to Mr Mame from here, but I saw that his MAME machine
went for $1250 or so.  Good for him.

I hope everyone had fun, and didn't have Cognitive Dissonance (buyer's remorse)
like I did.

And did anyone stick around long enough to see how much the Midway Golf
game (with the pullback joystick) went for?

I apologize for my anti-social tendencies. (I have a feeling I saw Paige and Brogner there though)

Evening

I saw tons of people that I knew.

I bought a DOA Hydra for $85. I have since got it up and running, but the monitor is a bit jumpy (solder joints).

ALso bought a beautiful Sega Turbo with no boards for $45 (I have boards).

Got a Japanese Super Space Stranger cocktail (dedicated, almost all text in Japanese, has 100 Yen mech) for $30. Game boots to garbage on the screen and the sound of Invaders advancing.

Finally I bought a "The Chicken Machine" plastic egg machine for $10. Got it home, plugged it up and it worked.

Amazing things I saw.

Bootleg Track and Field in conversion cab brought $400+
That $1200 Mame cabinet
The other 2 Mames that only brought 300 each.
THe $100 Puckman disaster (painted over boot hill with a 13" vertical monitor that somehow I and 5 other people realized had a Puckman board (bootleg) inside.

Had I the room for a twin motorcycle game I could have got one for $50 and I bid $100 on a fully working Puck Bowler (1960S) and the $125 bidder got it. A non-working one went for $10
A couple of nearly new Candy Style Japanese Photo machines went for $125 each. I nearly bought one to convert to Uo Poko.

Hydra in action.

Here is my issue here. I had originally bid the Hydra assuming it would have a dead board and or a dead monitor and that I was going to be Maming it as a yoke cabinet.

Of course now it works, which really complicates things.

Ohhh. I would hate to have that dilema....Buying a dead game at auction only to get it to work :'( lol.  Oh wait... that happened to me once. I got a "dead" Spy Hunter for $50 and got it up and running.  Its always a sweet feeling  ;D  Even though I struck out this time it was nice to meet everyone that I did finally.
BTW does anyone know the story on the Neotec monitors??  did those guys pay $160 each for those after bidding $55/each??  I got lost on that one
