First Project (not yet named) *Update* 1/8/06
« on: October 23, 2005, 07:24:11 pm »
Just thought I'd share my new project.  I got my controls from ponyboy (great seller) yesterday and have built a mockup of my control panel with some spare pine from a different project.  So far I am wired up to an IPAC2 that is working well.  I also have a PS2 adapter from Ultimarc but havent gotten it working yet (I tried to use a USB to PS/2 Adapter and I dont think it liked that, will have to get a new cable soon).  I want to be able to play as many games as possible on the system (2.8Ghz P4, 1GB ram, 9600xt) as having an arcade has always been a childhood dream of mine.  I never even knew MAME existed until I happened to stumble acrossed this guys page looking at poker tables (click and scroll down):

http://rattlhed.home.comcast.net/poker/faq.html

Here are some pics of the temporary CP, the big space in the center is for the trackball (HUGE Golden tee fan!).  The p1 start and coin buttoms will also be moved to the left.  The quick disconnects are for future CP interchangeability (hopefully steering wheels and flight stick).  Light guns coming soon.  Monitor is a 27" TV.  Artwork theme is still up in the air, Im thinking kind of a red vs blue idea.  My girlfriend is a graphic designer so Im gonna bug her to do something cool.  Already have my slot cutter from T-molding.com, color of molding will depend on the artwork.  Ill try and keep this updated, Ive been researching for months and have finally started.  Any questions/comments let me know! :)

CP is looking good.  Remember you need a fair amount of room before and certainly after the trackball to allow for your hand's forward motion.  Some folks forget and end up with bruised knuckles trying to play Golden Tee.

While I am posting links, here is a great one to all of Bob Roberts tutorials as well as his parts pages.

ah, the old 1x12 pine control panel...mine lasted over a year and a half of nearly everyday wear and tear before I finally built my real one about a month ago.  It was a fine control panel and served me well....sometimes I still miss it...(sniff)

I agree with giving the trackball plenty of room...I had to fit my controls into a narrower space on the new panel then I had on the pine one and now there's not quite enough room to the right of the trackball.  Sometimes we whack our hands on the second player joystick while trying to make a hard shot to the right on minigolf.

Well I got my trackball today.  I got what seems like a good deal on ebay, and the guy is giving away free mounting plates with it.  It's the Happ 3" PS/2 USB Red Transluscent.  I ordered it Tuesday and it got here today, couldn't believe it.  Anyways here is the updated picture, not much, just the new TB and a few new buttons for it.  It really looks a lot better once its lit up as well, I gotta get a DC adapter to power it tomorrow from work.  Here ya go:

Thanks for the compliment.  The speakers are wired to a Kenwood shelf system you can see in the bottom of the cab.  A set of 6x9 still has to be mounted in the bottom front.  Once I do that and get the LEDs hooked up to power Ill snap a couple pics.  Eventually Ill probably swap out the kenwood for a car radio, but for now all the ones I have are in use.  Also, the sub in the bottom is not hooked it, it s for the home theatre on the TV that is right next to the cab, I just had no where to fit it.

On a side note, this is probably why it has been so long since I posted the progress I made weeks ago.  I purchased a new car and I have been driving it all over the place.  Here is a picture of it on the day I picked it up, 12/22/05.  I still have yet to see another one on the road (Si that is, I saw one Civic Coupe).

Looks good, too bad you made the fatal flaw of hooking it up early because now it'll never get finished.

That's a great cab you're building.
I saw you have an aquarium and an idea just popped up  ;D

I don't think anyone pulled it before, but if someone would put one instead
of a marquee, I think it would beat any design ever made.
Not to mention some neon backlight...

I know it's far fetched, but to see some fish swimming in an arcade machine...  ;)

Haven't we all seen what was done to that poor Asteroids cabinet by now ???

/hijack

To sky: Nice work ... look forward to seeing the finished product ... and don't listen to anybody who tells you to put fish inside an arcade cabinet.

Cheers.
