panasonic display monitor remote q

I just bought a professional display monitor from ebay for my cabinet.  Now that I have the monitor I cant hear any sound from the built in speakers.  There is no remote and no way to adjust the sound without the remote.  I called panasonic and they said the remote for this monitor is 157.00. Is there any way around buying the remote ?  Would a universal remote work
