It's not corrupted, its mame is storing html character codes.  for alien 3 that's a superscript 3&173;.

HC, did you try looking at the controls.dat ini file and the listinfo info you use in DK?  The ini file should be outputing the character as noted in xml, however they output something different in listinfo.

It is causing issues with some parsers though.
