CAExtreme LaserMAME - no offers. Up the ante?
« on: August 16, 2002, 09:15:37 pm »
We haven't gotten any offers from folks willing to let us use their control panel for LaserMAME at the upcoming CAExtreme show. It must mean either there isn't anyone in the area who has an appropriate CP, or it means we're not offering enough incentive... So, what will it take? Do you have a CP that would work, but weren't interested in free admission? What should we offer? Money's out since we're not making any... Parts? Some of our staff have lots of stuff they might be willing to trade... empty cabinets, coin doors, joysticks and buttons...

Someone else suggested building our own, but nobody on staff has time with all the work that needs to be done before the show, plus the LaserMAME guys already have a control panel setup, it's just not portable enough to bring across the country to the show. We won't need the CP after the show, so borrowing one seems like the best idea.

Maybe someone has a whole MAME cabinet we could use? We could just disconnect power to the monitor and plug the controls into the LaserMAME computer... it would need the same control setup as mentioned in the previous post.

Thanks for ideas,
Tim

Hi Tim, nice to see you back on BYOAC.  I'm sorry I can't help you out (remember I bought the NBA Showtime cab from you during last years show). I don't have a mame control panel, only a Dreamcast panel (2 joysticks and 8 buttons per player...no spinner/trackball/pc interface).   :(

I have a hotrodse cp, an ugly byo cp with a spinner (with two trigger joysticks & cp buttons), and a trackball mounted on a test box of unpainted OSB without buttons.

I'd gladly lend the hotrod and others, but ...

The ugly spinner board needs heavy springs for both the trigger joys for a non-wimpy feel, and the spinner needs to be "adjusted" a little (it's too close to the cp to get a good handle on).  (Maybe a different knob would work, also.)  Only the top is painted (dark green), and the unpainted sides/bottom show the partical board, glue, etc.

**added** The joysticks are hacked happs competitions, and I still have the original shafts, so I could pull out the trigger sticks and put in the original shafts if you want.  It uses an IPAC for the sticks & buttons, and an OSCAR with USB or PS/2 plugs.**

The test trackball box, well, the trackball works great.  That's all I can say about it, and besides the lack of buttons, no paint, and the spinters I sometimes get, it works.   :P

**added** The trackball is a 3" with happs USB interface.  I can drill holes & add 3 buttons through USB interface (quickest), up to constuct another cp with the trackball and buttons hooked through the other IPAC I have.**

I might be able to do the fixes (above) to the two built-my-owns, but it depends on work and if I get over this cold I got beginning of this week and still have. :(

The other big problem is getting the stuff over to you.  I am not a morning person, and I live just north of Berkelely (1 hour drive w/ no traffic, no cops), so if that adds any problems.... Maybe I should get them to you Thurday or Friday before the thing starts.

BTW, I can post pictures Sunday.  I'll be busy all day Saturday, so I can't reply until Sunday either.  email: (remove the "REMOVE") urebel@REMOVEusa.net or check my site, in sig.
