Taito 'Jungle Hunt' SideArt Vectorising Project*Done*
« on: May 23, 2004, 08:44:16 am »
Troops,

Have just uploaded a vectored 'Jungle Hunt' Marquee to the Arcade Art Library.

Looking for decent quality pics or digital snaps of the Bezel and generic Taito cabinet sideart for vectorising.

So far, the ones I have found on the net are quite average.

Any help??

Cheers

If I can get to my moms house I have a Taito cab there.

I also have a Jungle King marquee.

Cheers.

That would be great!

I'd be really interested in JH sideart and any Jungle King/Jungle Hunt vector files.  I have a Taito cab I'm wanting to restore.

If someone draws up the sideart, I will print it and lay it on top of my cabinet to make sure it is accurate, and provide information to adjust whatever is slightly off.  Since this art is only one color, stencils or vinyl stickers could be cut relatively easily/cheaply.

Someone already vectorized the Jungle King bezel but only rendered it at 1024x768 or so, for use with Mame.  If you can get ahold of the guy he might give up the vector file.

From Yahoo: (you will have to take the cached version since the website just recently went "inactive"):

Thanks mahuti.

However I have this one as well.  I think I will straighten it up in Photoshop and vector what I can.  I'll still need another shot down the track for the writing at the bottom though.

Cheers mate.

Here is a snap of the sideart.  One from the brochure (grainy) and one from two photos pasted together and tweaked a little with photoshop.

Someone please vectorize this.  I have a taito cabinet which I could measure to get precise widths of the lines and letters, etc.  This way it could be made accurate enough to print it (or have vinyl cut) to apply as sideart (or stencils, what I would really like to use it for).

I want to repaint my cabinet to make it look perfect.  My sideart is painted over but I can still see the old art through it just barely.  So I can measure it easily.

Great effort.

Will start to vectorise based on these pics ASAP.

Check-out the WIP thread for updates.

Jungle King bezels and marquees are pretty easily available, but the CP overlay is not.  I have some pics I have tweaked, would anyone like to take the task of vectorizing it?

Since Jungle Hunt CP's are available, this isn't necessary but would be nice.  Personally I like the JK artwork a lot better.  Obviously the side art is the same for both games and would probably be the more important thing to vectorize.

Wade,

The CPO has already been vectorised and posted at the 'Arcade Art Library' online.  I also recently posted the marquee vectorised.

I'm talking specifically about the Jungle KING artwork, not Hunt.  The Jungle Hunt CP is still available NOS if you want an original one for your cabinet.  The Jungle KING artwork is different and isn't reproduced or available anywhere to my knowledge.

Post any pics you have of Jungle King together in in one zipped file to at the arcade art library either me, or someone else can then trace it.

Okay.  Here are the files I have (I'll upload them to the repository).  The CP is going to be real imperfect because I don't have any better pictures.  However, I have a good bezel which should help with the CP.

Note the pixelation on the orange gradient on the side of the bezel.  I'm sure this same screen print pixelation is present on the CP, so it would be best to duplicate this.  Also, some of the detail can't be seen on the CP but it is more visible in the Bezel image and in the jk_mast logo file.  Unfortunately we don't have great images so I guess we'll just have to work with what we have.

On the bright side, the Bezel and Marquee are fairly available so the CP is the only real "missing piece".

The logo is great. The bezel & CP are a bit too low res to do an accurate trace. I wouldn't want to spend a great deal of time on this knowing that it might be wildly off of the original. The bezel & CP look good, but not high-res enough to do a good trace. Great reference, but not a great source.

That's too bad, maybe someone will snap a good pic of the CP then.

Okay, here are the dims for the sideart.  I know that some are missing, but this should help to get it a lot closer.  I can measure the missing parts as-needed.

Wade,

Cheers for the Dims.  This will help heaps, especially due to the lower quality of the Taito_orange sideart pic previously posted in this thread.
I'll compile these dims in DeltaCAD and export them to Illustrator as a DXF file.  Should be sweet.
(As previously mentioned in an email to you) If you have time (and willing), are you able to grab some generic snapshots of the front and rear of the cab and measure the dimensions of these areas as well, then post/or email them to me so I can do a complete cabinet dimension plan at the same time, I'll then send them to Jakobud.com?

Good Job mate.

HA!  I just started to Mame a Jungle King this weekend.  It had been converted to Choplifter in the original Taito cab.  When I pulled off the artwork it still has the original Jungle King artwork underneath.  It is honestly super mint except for the fact that whoever converted it to Choplifter decided to hold the CL art on with lexan so it has extra holes in it because of the lexan bolts.  I can scan the artwork and take a multitude of pics if you like.  Or if you like, I will trade the entire metal cp with artwork for your Taito metal cp.  I will be putting my own artwork on it anyway so I don't care what is on there.  I also have the JK bezel but I can't remember if it is mint or not.

I'd really like dibs on the CP if it is in nice shape, and also the bezel if it is decent.  Please email me at wadelanham at hotmail.com or let me know where I can reach you.

I will scan/photo the CP in detail if I end up with it.  Nannuu, as far as scanning the side art, you'll have to see if the others can use it.

Thanks!!

Wade,

Still in the process of drawing up the sideart, pretty much solely based on your dimensions.  Obviously some dimensions are missing, so I scaled the best sideart pic I have and measured of it, where possible.   Not ideal, but the best option currently available to me.

I've been on shiftwork and busy putting up my workshop.  I'll try and finish the vector asap.

I'm also compiling the cabinet dimensions on DeltaCAD as I go, so the extra dimensions will be great.  I'll keep bugging you if I need any more dimensions..  :)

Cheers

Here's the current stage of the Taito sideart vector 'Wade' (in dodgy jpeg).  Mostly done in DeltaCAD as it based on your dimensions and not a vector trace.  Will clean it up, adjust and finish it in illustrator.  Won't be %100 accurate based on the available digital pics and resources, but probably won't tell the difference unless it's next to an original.

Still building the workshop and stuck on arvo shifts at work.

Trying to squeeze out time where I can (As do we all)

I took a lot more dims last night.  Mostly what you'd need to build the cab.  I didn't take any new measurements of the sideart.  I was looking at what I wrote down yesterday and I noticed I missed a few important lengths.  I will try to get them tonight.  I'll go ahead and scan in what I have, probably this morning or this afternoon.

I wasn't sure what to measure with the sideart.  If there are certain problem areas where you need more measurements, let me know where they are and I'll go over them again or in more detail.  I also need to measure the art on the front of the cabinet.

UPDATE.

Still chipping away at the sideart stencil.   Work has been busy.  Came across a little problem during the transfer from DeltaCAD to Illustrator.  I am about to post for answers.

Here's where it's at..... ALMOST DONE...... Just need to fix some path problems which is hindering the color fills.

The accuracy will still be in question due to the lack of quality scans/pics.  Without 'Wade's helpful dimensions......wouldn't have started it!!

Looking good!  I've been really busy lately too so I haven't taken as many measurements as I'd ideally like.

If there are any additional areas of the sideart which would benefit from more measurements, just highlight them on your image and post them here.  Then I'll measure those areas.

Also, after your image is ready, I can print it on a large format printer and overlay it onto my cabinet, and provide you with adjustments where needed.  We should be able to get it extremely accurate this way.  Or, we could just go with it, if it is only off by fractions of an inch, I don't think anyone would ever know the difference unless they applied it right over top of the original.

There's no rush, but I'd really like to see this completed.  This Taito project is on my backburner, compared to other projects, but I would like to help keep it moving when I can.  Then hopefully, by the time I am ready to finish up this project, this artwork will be 100%. :)

Does anyone know approximately how much this would cost to get cut in one color of vinyl?  At this point, that is what I'm leaning towards doing for my cab.  I suppose, once the file is ready, I could take it to a sign shop and get prices for both vinyl and a paper mask (assuming they will cut a paper mask).

Keep up the good work! :)

Wade

Still working on the workshop.  Almost finished with shelving.  Workbench is made and the rest of the tools have been bought.
Work is STILL busy.  Hopefully will calm down soon.
Screw this time management thing!!!!!!!
Maybe with some manipulation of the earths distance to the sun, we can create 30 hour days!!!!!

I'm still having problems with paths in the sideart due to the conversion from CAD based software to Illustrator.  This is hindering my finalising the stencils.  I can't re-import back into into DeltaCAD without problems, so I have to finish it in Illustrator.  I'm not proficient in any other CAD progam unfortunately.

I am going to revive my HELP post to see if one of the major vector guru's can help with my path problems.

I'll post that now!!

As soon, as the side stencils are done, I'll get straight into compiling the cabinet dimensions in DeltaCAD from Wade's dimensions and some original parts that are being shipped to me.

Game On!

*Update*.

After posting for help on my paths problems, 'Zorg' came to the rescue.

I have just received back my PATH CORRECTED AI file, thanks to 'Zorg'.

The stencils are now back in full swing.  I just need to finish and tweak one side, before I start the opposite side...which obviously won't take long as it is mirrored (except for the Text).

Game On!  You fricken beauty!! ;D

Spriggy,

Before starting the second side... how about sending me the left side artwork.  I am supposed to go to my bro's office and print up a BUNCH of stuff soon, and I could print up that side life-sized.  Then I could overlay it on my cabinet and make sure there are no gross mistakes.  It would be best to do that before you copy it and flip it for the other side.  It'd be nice to make this little check for accuracy before we all go print sides up or get vinyl cut out. :)

No worries.

The general sideart is now complete.

Be warned, I KNOW you WILL find some mistakes in some of the curved areas as well as other areas.  Your dimensions obviously helped greatly, however it is difficult, if not near impossible to give dimensions to a lot of the bezel curves and bullnose curves on this sideart.  Hence I have had to trace them with warped and low quality jpegs (no ones fault).

I am not happy with some of these areas at all.  I am currently revising the artwork and going to use a new plugin I am downloading, to see if it can help me tighten up those aforementioned areas.

*Updated/Modified* - (Replied to thread at the end of shift tonight...continued when I got home)

The main suspect areas will be around the large main curves towards the front of the sideart and it's connection with the lines surrounding the 'Taito' text.  The 'Taito' text itself could not be traced accurately enough, so I used the closest font I could find and overlayed it as reference.  Not ideal, but sufficient.

As for the rest of the sideart, it is based on your helpful dimensions and scaled dimensions and angles I squeezed out of the dodgy jpegs I had.  This obviously may cause some problems.

I'm also on the back foot, as my Illustrator skills are still on a steady upward learning curve and not to the level of the more proficient users, ie Mahuti, tbombaci, Zorg to name but a few!

No excuses I suppose.  Just head down and shut the frick up!   :)

Stay Tuned.

Spriggy,

No problem.  I figure if any lines or curves are off significantly, I can give you the info you need to correct them, and there will be no need to further check it against the original, since we aren't producing "reproduction" artwork stencils or stickers for sale or anything.

I'm just hoping my local sign shop can cut paper masks pretty cheaply.  I think getting it cut in vinyl is probably going to be cost prohibitive (and it would also be less like the original).

I understand it won't be perfect.  If the art on my cabinet wasn't painted over I could fairly easily scan the sides in pieces, then paste them all together in photoshop, for a perfect reproduction.  But since it is painted over, the lines are only visible when looking at the game in certain light, where the "edges" of the original paint can be seen.

Wade,

The sideart is as good as I think I can get it with what I have to work with (And my skill level).

I have learnt heaps during this vector conversion and if I knew what I know now when I started the project, I probably would have done areas of the conversion differently.  Pity my crystal ball was broken at the time!

I'll utilise your offer of checking the vector via overlaying a plotted sample overtop of your cabinet, before I complete the opposite side and upload them to the library.

I have a scaled AI (182kb) and unscaled EPS (3.08meg) file formats to email to you.  Just tell me which one you want.   If I was to give you the scaled EPS file it would be 19meg.  The printing places can easily scale it in Illustrator or other software.  If relevant, check the scaled AI as well before printing.  Remember, this artwork started as a CAD based file.  The bottom cabinet depth dimension (width, depending on how you look at the vector) is 29 1/4 inches as per your dimensions, if you want to check the scale.

I'm dubious about the accuracy in some areas.  I suppose we'll find out soon enough.  It doesn't help being 1000's of miles away in Australia without access to ANY of these cabinets. (Stop crying you fool!!)

Here's a pic of her in current form.

Awaiting your reply for email!
Good Luck!!

Spriggy,

   It looks great!

The AI file would be fine.  I'll just use the bottom dimension to make sure it is sized correctly before we print it.

Now I just have to get to my brother's office.  I have a bunch of art piling up that I've been wanting to print.  Maybe I can force the issue and go by there next week (this week and weekend is out of the question). :)

I'm going to have to get back on the cabinet dims soon.  While looking over my sketches, I noticed some important lengths were missing.

Well spriggy, you are right, the art is off slightly.  It IS good enough that if you wanted to make a stencil or get vinyl cut from it, it would work.  I checked several spots so far and there are a lot of places where it is off by 1/8-1/4 inch.  This is not something you would notice unless measuring it, though.  Not really detectable to the common eye.

The outside dims of the cabinet appear to be right on, except there is a slight discrepancy on the inner curve at the monitor, as would be expected since I wasn't sure of a good way to measure this.

I will try to detail the worst parts so you can correct them, if you'd like.  It is going to take a few hours though, and I know I won't be able to do it until this weekend at the very soonest.

Thanks a lot for your efforts so far.  Like I said, it really is good enough now that you could use it if you wanted.  It'd just be a shame not to make it a bit more accurate when everything is ready, all that is needed is a little more time invested.

I looked into getting vinyl cut, but it is going to be expensive.  I think I am going to have my brother print it up full size and go that route.  I'm trying to keep this project's costs down.

Wade,

Thanks for your efforts once again.  Pity about the inaccuracy, however I'm not surprised.  I'm glad the outside dims are correct (except the main large curve).    Your dims are the only reason I started this, so a credit to your efforts.  Even with your dimensions, if one of the ends of any straight lines is off by a hair in offset, length or angle, by the time you get to the opposite end, the problem would have compounded.  Plus the only JH pics/scans available to me, were rather dodgy.  Also, the original cabinet artwork is 'wonky' in some areas from the factory, which makes it difficult to draw with just dimensions and not a decent scan.

However you do state, that it is pretty good and the problems are "not really detectable to the common eye."

Based on your checking, are you confident enough to say that this vector file could be used as a stencil or vinyl overlay on an original Taito cab?  If the outside dims are correct as you say, then this would still be viable.  The dim errors would only be noticeable if you had it next to an original.  The reason I ask........ If we change one dimension on one of the lines, this change will cause a huge snowball effect.  It would probably be easier to start again.   Do we really want to go to this path?  If I have too...yes.  Do I want too? Not sure!

I know it's a big call, but I will have to trust your judgement on this, as you are my 'eyes' in relation to these issues.  By Star Trek matter transporter is broken down here in Australia, so I can't zip across anytime soon!!   ;D

Thanks again.  I'll await your reply.   ;)

Good Job!

For some reason, I never get an email when this thread gets updated like I select when posting.

It is good enough you could use it for a stencil and only someone comparing side-by-side with a discerning eye would know the difference.

I would like to give one last effort to correcting the worst parts, before calling it "finished".  I probably won't get to this until this weekend though.  I know, slow moving.  But we *are* getting there. :)

Wade,

No problems.  If I had too, even though it would be slightly frustrating, I'd start it again from scratch, depending on how many errors there are.  We can't expect it to be perfect with the methods we are using, however I would also like to get it as close as possible.

I'll wait to see your list of errors before we decide which direction to take.

Thanks

Thanks for your input Zorg.
However, this is one of the scans I used during the Sideart development.  I found that that this photo of the sideart was not taken exactly perpendicular and hence was skewed.  I also found it difficult to repair the skewed areas.

Thanks anyway.

Spriggy,

Just as a heads up - I'm finishing up some house projects now and big work projects at the end of the month, and I plan to get back on the JK/JH cabinet work right after that.  So hopefully I can give you some fixes on the dims.

For all your work on this, perhaps you would be interested in a free set of sideart for your cab?  It wouldn't be much trouble for us to print an extra set.  I'm really looking forward to getting this sideart finished and printed up, so I can get my JK cab looking nice.

G'Day Wade,

Thanks for the offer mate, but I couldn't take artwork off you for free.  You know what it's like........ you do this sort of stuff because you want to.....not because you have to!!  I'm one of those idiots who likes to see everyone else happy before I look after myself...which is fricken stupid at times.

In relation to the sideart, when your ready give us a hoy!!

These last few months have been a killer for me.  One of my little ones has been quite ill and the politics at work have hit me a bit.  Trying to juggle my cab projects with the house renovation has been a little bit hard as well.  ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---... I haven't even ordered all my parts for the T&F cocktail.  I plan on doing that next week.

Enough of my sooky behaviour... Keep my updated.

Thanks for the offer again.

Damn, I forgot what this place looked like.

Still snowed under with the priority of my ill family member.  On top of work, I'm finding some time to finish the house renovations, however NO TIME for my arcade cab's :'( and artwork projects.......yet.  Will get on top of this illness yet!!!

Wade,  our Taito sideart project has and will lay dorment until I win our battle at home.  However, based on your previous comments ('still very usuable sideart'), albeit not 100% accurate, would it be worth uploading to the Art Library?? Feedback??

I also have a 90% finished vector trace of the DK Junior CPO.  I will chuck on a thread to anyone interested in finishing it.

The battle continues......

Missing this place and arcade madness heaps...

Spriggy,

Sorry to hear about the continuing problems at home.  I hope things improve for you soon!

As far as the art.  It would probably be worth uploading anyway.  Might want to state that it isn't totally accurate.  If we (or others) ever get motivated enough to make it better, it could be corrected and updated on the vector site at that time.  I just keep finding so many other projects ahead in line. :/

Maybe we'll be lucky enough to find a cab with more visible artwork (mine can't be scanned because the sides are painted over - I have to look at a certain angle to see the edges of the paint) and actually scan the side of the cabinet itself.  Then a super-accurate trace could be created.

Well,  the Taito Side Art has eventually been uploaded to the AAL.  As I've previously commented (About 100 times!!), it is not 100% accurate, but usable.  Please read this entire thread if you wish to know the inconsistencies and reasons behind them. :-\

If I ever get access to a side art scan off one of these cabs, the project will be updated to improve accurracy.

Big thanks to Wade for all his help.  Thanks to zorg for help on some path problems I was having.

*runs off*

Thanks Spriggy.
I'd scan if I could, but mine is under bright red (oil-based) paint.  It's a MESS when you try to sand.  Hope the little 'roo is better.

I'm about to buy a Jungle Hunt cabinet....

What's the deal with this sideart? Has anyone used it yet? Pictures?

See my other thread for a pic of the cab I am buying:

You won't need to use the vector version.  Your sideart is fully exposed, so you can just follow the lines when (if?) you need to touch it up.  That sideart looks pretty good from the pic...

Any chance you can wheel it into Home Depot for paint codes on the way home from picking it up? ;)

I would like to try these files on my cabinet, however there is only the left side.  Also, as usual I've picked up more projects which I'm working on in the meantime.  However, I have almost everything I need to complete the Jungle King project, so if both sides of the art were available then I might push it up further on my list.  I would also need someone to rasterize it for me (Adobe Photoshop 7 messes up a line here or there, when I rasterize).

Spriggy,

No rush at all.  I was just stating that there are a couple of barriers for why I haven't used the art yet.  It obviously isn't a priority of mine or anything.

There are a couple of reasons why I would need them rasterized.  My bro's office typically just scans and reprints things with the large format scanner/printer.  They don't even use the PC most of the time.  When they do, they pretty much just use Photoshop.  So then he has the same problem I have (Photoshop 7 messes up some of the vectors).  Maybe there is a patch for this, I honestly haven't even looked.

Also... to allow some room for error, I need to expand the border all the way around by 1/2 inch or so.  That way, I can glue the art on the cab, and then just trim the excess art off.  Since I don't have a Vector program, I would have to just do this using Photoshop.  Another reason why I would need to convert to raster.

I'm full steam ahead on another restoration right now.  But it will probably be done in 2-4 weeks, and perhaps I will pick this up after that.  It would be nice to see a real game with the artwork applied.  I think it will look pretty sharp. :)

Wade,

I can rescale the main base layer for you in AI to allow overhang for trimming and then raster it for you.  PM me with the DPI your brother want's the file @, if you can.

I'm also going to fix the 'TAITO' font on the AI file to get it closer.  It's obviously incorrect (especially the 'A').    Found some better side shots of the original artwork.

cheers.
