Converting Arcade Legends with USBLinx to JPAC --Help Needed
« on: April 06, 2020, 12:47:33 pm »
Hello.

I currently have an original Arcade Legends (version 1) with a USBLinx Jamma Interface.   I converted it to a MAME Machine a few years ago leaving the USBlinx as the interface in place.   I had to use soft15Khz for the Arcade Monitor in the cabinet..and a batch file to cycle numlock (watchdog timer), but I got it working well.    I'd like to move away from the USBlinx as it seems to like to reset itself for no reason and garbles the graphics. Some days it's fine...other days I get resets for no reason.

The cabinet is 2 player (6 buttons each) with a trackball.   There are also P1/P2 Start, Coin and Exit Buttons (24 buttons total I think).
Sound is amplified through in-cabinet speakers.
Wells Gardner Arcade Monitor.
In addition to the JAMMA connector on the USBlinx it also has some connections that come in through 2 more molex connectors on the card.

I 'think' I can replace the USBlinx with a J-PAC and Opti-pac (for the trackball).  Can someone who is more familliar with the J-PAC and Opti-Pac take a look at my assumptions?

  • The USBlinx is currently powered via 12V power supply from the MAME PC.   This goes away with the J-PAC becuase it is powered via USB?
  • I simply remove the JAMMA connector from the USBlinx and connect it to the J-PAC?
  • There is a 12pin molex with 6 wires for the trackball.  I would cut these wires and wire them to the Opti-Pac?
  • There is a 12pin molex with 5 wires for P1/2 buttons 5&6+Exit.  I would cut these and wire to the Jpac screw terminals?

In addition--How do I replace the sound amplification that is on the current USBlinx.  I think there are currently 4 wires out of the JAMMA connector that run +/- to the 2 speakers.    Is the J-PAC setup for 2 speaker connected to it?   Am I better off just cutting the speaker wires to the JAMMA connector and removing them from the J-PAC and getting a little amplifier instead?

Am I missing anything?  I'd like to get the J-PAC and Opti-Pac on order but want to make sure this setup will work.

I have the J-PAC and Opti-Pac on order.

I think I have a plan figured out, but I'm not sure the easiest way to wire the buttons that do not connect through the JAMMA.

They are connecting through a molex (female) to the top of the USBlix board (male).  Is there a male molex to bare wire adapter that somone can recommend?
