Updating files wirelessly???
« on: April 09, 2004, 06:24:14 am »
G'day guys!

Trying to put together a couple of projects, and I need your help with something.

I am a little naive when it comes to the whole wireless network thing. What I am trying to achieve is to have a jukebox and other devices that automatically/manually update their mp3s/files when my laptop is in range. In other words if both have wireless cards is there a program that can allow me to update the files from my laptop on to another computer, or check to see if its files need to be updated from my laptop. Sounds confusing... so if I need to describe the scenario a bit better feel free to fire away.

Cheers!

Using windows on both your juke and laptop? If so, it sounds like a good use for Offline Folders.

Ive not done much with them, but there are settings for how and when to synchronize, which folder should be considered the master.

Should be able to find plenty of info in either the windows help or the KB at microsoft.com

Another option would be to try download.com.  You might have to search a few different ways to get something.

I would suspect this is a fairly common task/problem and is not difficult programmatically, especially with the way modern operating systems streamline networking...so I bet you could find something.

(Be sure and post your results...I'm sure others would be interested!)

What was that again?

Files on the Jukebox could be easily updatable via wireless network.  You would simply put an 802.11b or 802.11g adapter in the jukebox, and one in your laptop or desktop.   Next, it would be easy to set up a share on your jukebox computer via windows file sharing, and simply map it as a network drive on the computer you are using to update it.

Additionally, you could load WinVNC on it, and be able to remote control the computer in the jukebox from another computer via wireless.  Microsoft Terminal Services would also work for this.

When doing this, I would recommend implementing a password to secure your computer.
