Are Super and Competition handles interchangeable?
« on: June 09, 2002, 09:06:10 am »
According to one of the project websites that I was looking at recently, the handles on the Super and Competition joysticks are interchangeable. Please can some confirm whether this is true.

I've had a look at the joystick reviews on the Oscar Controls website and he seems to prefer the Competitions. However I think the Super handles look a lot better.

According to the same website (http://www.pccab.net/components.htm) it is also possible to make a genuine 4 way Super Joystick by using parts from a top firebutton joystick. This sounds interesting.

They aren't 100% interchangeable.  The Super's handle is longer than the Competition's by about 1/4".  The Competition handle is too short to use with the Super's base and there isn't enough room left on the shaft for the actuator.  The Super's handle is longer because it's hourglass shaped actuator requires more room on the shaft than the Comp's compact, square shaped actuator.  Also note that the Comp's handle is not height adjustable with the use of different spacers like the Super, the spacer is molded on the Comp's shaft.

However, you can use the Super's shaft on the Competition's base by using the long shaft spacer from the Super and the white base spacer from the Comp (instead of the Super's conical one).  See Happ part # 95-0194-00 in the Comp's exploded view to see what part I'm talking about.

The Super's handle is a bit meatier and easier to grasp, I think.  Hope this helps.
