Insane in the mamebrain? Feedback please!
« on: October 21, 2005, 05:51:06 pm »
After a couple of months of lurking aroung here, I've decided to make my first post. I'm taking this opportunity to announce my first cabinet project: "mamebrain".

I just recently had spinal surgery and I've used the last six weeks to come up with a design for my cabinet and the artwork to go along with it. In that six weeks, I changed the design nearly eight times! I think that if I had been able to start construction right away, I would not have come up with such a great design (in my opinion). Lesson for all those thinking of building a cab: take your time! Mame, the roms, the controllers, all that stuff will still be there in a few weeks. Spend as much time as you can afford perusing this forum to come with a design that will impress your friends and family.

The sideart will cover the entire side of my cabinet. The plan is that the eyes and the mouth will be lit up from behind much like the marquee and the four red lights up by the china doll's face with be LED lights sticking out from the cabinet.

I should be fully recovered from surgery with a month and a half to two months and then I'm on way to Hawai'i for three weeks so unfortunately construction won't begin until the new year but I'm really looking for it. I was bedridden for nearly two weeks and being able to spend time planning and dreaming of this cab made the experience tolerable.

I'm posting the artwork first so that I can get some feedback on it and I'll post the overall design of the cabinet shortly. One of my concerns is the marquee: will it look good lit up from behind or should I be making some adjustments to it?

Thanks

The art is cool, but to me, the pun-like name doesn't fit well with it.
Can't really add anything constructive, but all I can think of when I look at that art is a Voivod album cover.
Not even really that similar, but this is the one your art immediately brought to my mind.

Ok, Divine intervention from the 8th realm of hell demon...   that thing looks wicked!!!  The name is great, everything looks good, only thing I can think of from an asthetic point of view is giving the text a thick border, or something to make it jump out more.  If it wasn't going to be underlit it'd be fine, but put a flourescent on there, and the deep reds are going to phase out the white text.  Only other thing I would say is maybe follow the the rule of thirds, and give it one more place for your eyes to focus, like something in the background behind mamebrain, or some kind of pattern that ends on the bottom left corner or something.

An interactive side art if you could pull it off would also be cool.  If you could maybe screen the image on a circular piece of plexi, then do that electric ligthning thing I've seen on a few cabs that'd look pretty rocking.  Or something to make it look "ghosty" ya know.

-anyways, glad to her surgery went well and your byoac career is starting out.  glad to have you here.

Well, first of all, I have to say I sympathise with your situation and I consider myself lucky at the same time.

I didn't have spinal surgery.

I don't like the name either. How about "Insanity"?

Your artwork and lighting ideas look very interesting.

Good luck with your project!

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

I've posted a few of the design ideas I came up with, but I'm not the artist that you are.  I think your artwork is much darker than I'd choose for my own cab, but it shows talent none the less.

It's funny that you should say those things. I was most impressed with the cab designs you posted and in fact, I incorporated part of one your designs into my overall design. I'm just working on the final measurements and the blueprint drawings drawings and I'll get them up soon.

The artwork is dark and I'll admit not my first choice, either but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. The potential for this art is quite a bit higher than some others. I'd like to take credit for the drawing but it's actually done by Francis Tsai, who is the Lead Conceptual Artist at High Moon Studios. They are the guys responsible for the new console game - Darkwatch. The actual name of the character is 'meatbrain' hence the name 'mamebrain'. I thought I'd have some trouble getting by my wife but she said she didn't care what the cab looked like as long as she could play Street Fighter on it!
