WG4600's
« on: May 02, 2004, 10:37:45 pm »
I have the chance to get a stack of WG 4600's.  Likely they're not working.  Very likely, actually.

Just wondering the feasibility of repairing said monitors.  Difficulty level, things to watch out for, etc etc.

I've worked on a few 4600's, I like them better than Electrohome GO7's. (Usually *much* cleaner boards and typically not a blown fuse=HOT or Flyback bad).  Plus the plug in boards make swaps to find the troublespot much faster.

Basically other than simple cap kits, the problems I've seen on 4600's are:
- Bad pots on the plug in boards
- Bad diode 201 on the video i/o board ( picture cannot be made correct brightness and contrast..blooms to pure white.. diode measures the same both ways )
- Broken jumper wires to the positioning jumper blocks = offset screens

Granted, I've never swapped a flyback or HOT yet, but I've recovered 4 or 5 4600's by other means, while I have never been able to fix a G07 (not wanting to waste the time or money on new HOTs/Flybacks which are usually what go out on them).  Of course Ken L probably has good luck with them :)

Also, if there's brightness problems I have found some 4600's that had resistor R419 (330k, 1/2 watt) on the neckboard go open. You have to unsolder one end of it to test it in circuit as its tied across the screen control.

Never, ever did I have a flyback go bad on this model. It has to have the most rugged flyback ever made.

Of course I have fixed alot of Electrohome G07's over the years, too.

I am curious as to the condition of these.  They're being tossed by Art Mallet, so perhaps they're not worth fixing?

Yeah people seem to love the G07, but yet I've had nothing but problems with them and not worth fixing (for me anyway).  I'd take tons of 4600's over the others.  (My only working G07 is in my mspac coctail cab and has the dreaded 60hz frequency wave, and I've done the fixes and it still is there :(

Peale --

If Art is tossing them and you can get them free, repair the ones you want, and I'd definitely take any extra plug in cards you got plus a frame or two (looking for both horizontal shelf and vertical mount as well). Other than the tube disposal issue, if you can get em for free, grab as many as you can and save all the parts (including the yoke--then you can swap in new tubes for them) and toss any etched or busted tubes, saving everything else.

Flattenend frames and a box of boards/yokes will not take up much room--just weight. :)

I wish I lived by Art as I could get these extras he always has.

Let us know what's up... but like Ken said.. never seen a bad flyback on these beasts, and in fact, I'd rather get a 4600 up and running with an old yoke on a swapped in TV tube than even use the 8liners chassis... I just like the quality of the 4600's overall I guess.

I'll give it a shot.  I just wish I had

1) storage room for all these

2) technical know-how to fix them.

Post to this thread, myself or definitely Ken Layton will be able to help.

(I definitely do NOT have all the knowledge Ken does, so my name is no longer fitting, but before Ken got here, I thought I did know the most about monitors to help others, but Ken definitely exceeds my experience... anyway to change my name to MonitorTinkerer? :) )

Again, grab all you can, and then get rid of the bulky/weighty tube that are known dead (busted neck or strange dots/big center grey spot indicative of a loss of vacuum), strip them of yoke and rings and ground wires and toss the tubes).. That might help some of your storage issues.

In a big lot as a single shipment, I'd be willing to take some off your hands that you dont have room for for shipping costs at least, minus tubes of course, and I'm sure others here would too.  Like I said--a chassis or two, some extra plug in cards, a few frames (taken apart/collapsed), and some yokes from the RCA tubes they used could go towards some new monitors with donated tv tubes

Excellent.  Now to make the trip.  And clean out the van so I have room.
