I-PAC/4 4th player not working
« on: April 13, 2004, 07:33:31 pm »
I tried running Guantlet and only could get three players working.  The 4th player coinstart is the only thing that works pertaining to the 4th player.

I have it hooked up via USB on Win XP PRO AMD 1.3gig.  The swith is set to the "Mame" and "USB" positions
.
I ran the test procedure and it seems to work fine for that.  I also tried it in an N64 emulated game "Mario Party 2" via 1964.099 and same results as Gauntlet.

I also have not tried to reprogram using the ALT setting.

Anyone have a clue to what might be wrong?  TIA

Did you open up notepad to see if the joystick and buttons are outputting anything?

If I remember correctly, you need to 'turn on' the third and fourth players in MAME to get them to work the first time by programming them through the TAB menu.

I got my 4 player cab finished on the weekend and went through MAME to stick all the 4 player games in a seperate game list and test them all.  I found what Steve has pointed to, you need to program up the button config in ALL of the 4 player games for player 4 in the TAB menu the first time you use them (everything except the player 4 coin as you have already found).  With every game I tried players 1, 2 and 3 were already pre-set up but all the inputs for player 4 were listed as NA.  Once this is done you'll be up and running in 4 player heaven (as long as you have 3 friends).

Can't you simply remap the buttons in the "Input (general)" menu item in Mame's tab menu?  That would be a lot easier than remapping it for each individual game.

May I suggest you create a new folder within the mame/ctrlr folder
Copy the std.ini file from mame/ctrlr into your new folder
Rename this to default.ini
Edit it to include player 4 controls as they are actually mapped to joypad.  Also the 4th button on player 3 is mapped to a joypad button as well.
Then in mame32 change the Options-Default Game Option-Controllers and set My Controls to the new folder name.
Or mame change the mame.ini
### Input device options ###
ctrlr                 newfoldername

I've had troubles with the tab menus before.

I see a Pandora's box with this one.  Short answer is opinions vary.  Andy Warne has lately been favoring USB.  RandyT prefers PS/2.  (Both say for performance reasons apart from what their encoders support).

I have seen some performance issues with my USB trackballs and have heard some reports of problems (usually fixable) with the USB I-PAC that don't exist in PS/2.

My personal advice would be to use PS/2 for an arcade cab, and maybe USB for a desktop controller.

USB through an Optipac?

I have one of the newest IPACS, hooked up through USB.  I haven't run into any problems playing 1-player fighters (which is the hardest I've pushed it).  Now if I only had friends, I could comment further...

What was that again?

Should have clarified - PC Trackballs (Glorified upside-down mouse) to USB through its own internal electronics.

I am using Mame32 0.72  but i cannot find a "TAB" menu anywhere.  I see "Options->Default Options->Game Controllers.

When you are in the middle of actually playing the game and you press "tab" an in-game menu will appear.
