Cab audio Q's: Pots, speakers...
« on: March 30, 2004, 06:27:46 am »
For my cocktail I'm going to use a Creative Inspire 2400 2.1 set I have sitting around http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/showstory.jsp?storyid=2962 (prettied up Cambridge Soundworks SW320)

I wanted to improve the sound, so rather than just have the satellites muffled in the cab I was going to mount a pair of car speakers to the walls and run the satellites wires to them. Will there be any issues going from 4.5W RMS ~2" drivers to 4 or 5" 25W RMS car speakers? The biggest issue I can think of atm is that the amp probably filters the outputs to the satellites so they only see relatively high frequencies.

It has a remote volume control, so I also plan on rewiring that to another pot mounted with a knob outside the cab for ease of adjustment. My query here is, which pot? I know I need an audio taper one, is this the same as logarithmic? They're available from 500 to 2 000 000 ohm, Oscar used a 100 000ohm one (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/volume/index.shtml), but I don't really know what value I should be looking for. I guess I'll try a 100K logarithmic double ganged one yeah?

As far as groovy speaker covers go, I haven't seen anything but ugly cheap car speaker covers or basic thick plastic mesh, so I was planning on using 120mm fan grills, which should match the two 120mm fans (with grills) on the other side of the cab. Simple chrome rings, not too ugly, and just the right size for 5" drivers.
