sidewinder profile in mame32
« on: July 15, 2002, 12:45:33 pm »
I'm ready to start wiring up my sidewinder to my box and happ controllers.  I tested the sidewinder out before taking it apart and set  up a profile for mame (coin=left trigger, 1p=right trigger, etc)...however, when in mame32 (v61) the profile does not function.   The sidewinder profile utilities verify that i'm set up correctly.

Does anyone know what i'm missing?  I'd hate to not have the extra buttons available for my joystick project.

Thanks in advance!

Did you enable Joystick as a controller within MAME32?  Also did you setup the Joystick in Windows?

The nice thing about the Sidewinder hack is IF you only use emulators & games that are input configurable then it doesn't matter what buttons you wire to your controller--you just crimp 'em all and then just setup your control panel within the emulator itself.  No need to label the wires.

ok, i'm stupid.  I never tabbed into the 'in game' configuration in mame.   I guess I thought it would automatically detect any profile i had set up on the SW.
In any case, i'm ready now to crack open the SW and start hacking (as soon as my Happ shipment arrives).

I'm a little scared after reading the sw hack nightmare posted above!!!

Never mind . . . you meant THE OTHER POST!

Sorry, too early to read properly.

Signing off with a renewed sense of embarrassment and self-loathing . . .

While we are on the subject, can anyone tell me if a hack using the Sidewinder is adequate for a game like Gun Smoke which uses an 8-way joystick and has 3 fire buttons?

Thanks a lot.

Absolutely.  If everything goes well you should have the joystick and 9 additional inputs (buttons) available per stick.  Of course, since it's a joystick hack you don't ever have to worry about ghosting problems.

Gunsmoke-game I play every day BTW.

you hack a sidewinder,
you get the 4 directions and also 9 buttons...
a, b, c, x, y, z, l, r, start.

if gun smoke uses 8 way and 3 buttons,
then yes, 1 sidewinder is good for 1 player...
Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

Guys,
You get 10 additional inputs...don't forget the 'M' or shift button.

I use L R M and START for coin, 1p, 2p, and ESC respectively.
:)
