JPAC gamepad mode?

hi, ive just bought a usb version of jpac (need it for Arcade time capsule) and according to the winipac software its in keyboard mode but i need it in gamepad mode, ive tried hold down p1 start and buttons 1-5 but it doesnt change.
Its working fine as a keyboard :(
i will add that this was replacing an old JPAC with just the ps2 connection that is connected to my killer instinct 2 cabinet , it also had a few extra wires in , that i put in the same slots as my new one?!
