Strange volume control fault on Rowe R84 Jukebox
« on: May 20, 2023, 01:50:59 pm »
Recently a friend asked me to repair his R84's amplifier, type 6-07438-02, which has an annoying fault - when the volume control is turned up, the sound level is fairly low, but suddenly becomes very loud at around the halfway setting of the potentiometer.

I know this is not down to the pot being faulty, as this has been replaced with a new one.

All four dual op amps in the preamp have been replaced (two are LM1303N, and two are TBA231A, both being pin for pin replacements for the original RC4739DB op-amps).

The two safety lamps in the preamp have also been replaced, as have all of the electrolytic capacitors.

Can anyone shed any light on what has become a frustrating problem?
