Mortal Kombat 2 sound not working

Can someone help with my MK2 sound problem? I have a dedicated MK2 machine where the sound just quit working today. When I turned it on, I had sound but the volume was lower than usual and it was kind of staticky. Then after a few minutes, the sound went out all together. I have a UMK3 board that I switched everything over to and the sound on that worked perfectly. I have a second MK 2 board set so I tried various combinations of boards and sound boards but no luck. During all of the swapping around, I briefly got sound for a few seconds with one of the combinations I tried but then it went out again. I do hear faint static coming from the speakers but no game sounds, despite the red light on the sound board turning on so I know it's getting power. Anyone have any ideas?
