Arcade Lounge , Filling The Void
« on: June 01, 2021, 08:54:34 am »
Hey everybody,

I feel the need to build something again. So this time I will build a compact hanging bartop that fits the empty space in the IKEA cabinet setup.

And on the top will house the projector.

Total height of the cabinet + projector will be the same as the IKEA cabinet.

For starters i finished debating on my sketchup plans and have cut up some MDF.

Just a small heads up.

Hi Martijn, gotta ask...(off topic, I know, but...)... Do you use the projector for gaming?
Cheers

Made some more progress

The shape may look strange. But thats because it needs to fit within a ikea cabinet.

Started working on the control panel.

And laminated both sides.

Then applied the artwork and drilled the holes.

Then added the controls and components and wired things up.

The panel will be held in place with 8 very strong magnets. Because of the wall mounting of the cab, it was kind of a puzzle to make it as clean as possible without visible screws.

Love this.  The sharp lines just look fantastic.

I am very curious to see if your magnet solution works - I have tried in the past using rare Earth magnets and it didn't work.  I could still pop the CP off during quick movements with the joystick.  Maybe mine weren't big enough though.

Very cool cabinet.

I look forward to hearing that your magnet plan has succeeded.

After a weekend of arcade goodness, I can say that the magnets hold up great. The control panel is easy to remove, but feels like it's locked down when mounted.

It's really slim against the wall, but still very Arcade!. I approve!

I love it, its like a modern take on a "Bad Dudes" cab turned bartop.  The marquee art is simple but at the same time amazing. It really draws the eye.

very nice.

Cool to see that your plan to fill the space turned out that nice!

Stoked your magnets worked.
If I can establish the idea won't wreak havoc with a CRT I may flatter your design by stealing the idea

Organized the cables the best I could. There really isn't any space for anything else anymore. Happy it fits!

Cough!

I have been enjoying my cabinet for some time now. But the 4:3 games on a 27" 16:9 screen are not making me happy.
Adding a bigger 16:9 monitor is not possible. Neither is a 46" one and putting it on his side is not possible either.

I have read the news on the LG DualUp monitor with the 16:18 ratio and decided i will give it a try.
On paper is fits and should be a "easy" drop in.

At the moment i am using a Acer Nitro VG270 Monitor, with freesync and 1ms responds time.
With this i get perfect sync on games that are not 60hz

The dualup has 6ms delay and 60hz fixed. Meaning i need to try sync, triplebuffering options or live with screen hick-ups.

Lets see if the bigger screen makes up for all of that.

And i will be updating the keyboard encoders for the buttons with a brook fighting stick one. Some pc games need mapping and software options for mapping are a pain.
And maybe some LED buttons. I cant find any pink translucent ones for 28mm hole..

Should be working now

To get the screen to fit, i had to remove material from the upper joist, otherwise it would not fit..

And the new display was way thinner than the old one, because it has a external power supply.

So i made spacers on the display and screen mounting plate.

After that it fits perfect!

And i added 4 long screw pins to mount the screen. There was no way i could screw it tight again , i can't get behind the display anymore. It took up all the space to reach..
After sliding the display into the holes of the wooden spacer and mounting plate. It holds its place very well.

Then i made a new screen bezel.

Luckily, i had some leftover laminate.

After it dried i cut out the center to the correct size.

All done..

Turned out great.

Then i added the plexi back.

I absolutely love this screen. It's like a 25" CRT horizontal and vertical. !

Now i will continue on the control panel.

Adding a pacled controller and 2x fighting boards and a USB hub on that control panel will be a challenge.
