Help on GPU + CRT Emudriver
« on: May 19, 2021, 05:04:52 pm »
Hi All

Long time lurker here who is finally getting around to completion of my Arcade cabinet and need your help and support please

Background
Its a Virtua Fighter 2 cabinet by Sega.
Controls have been gutted and replaced with Sanwa joysticks and buttons wired into Ultimarc IPAC2
PC inside will be an i5 with 16gb RAM.
Monitor - Upgraded Tri-Sync 29" CRT monitor (With VGA input into the chassis).
Front End will by Hyperspin 8TB pre-configured hard drive and emulators loaded

Selecting the GPU is where I'm getting stuck. Ideally, I would like to run all old MAME games (including Street Fighter, Robocop, Golden Axe + many others in their native resolution @ native resolution - 15KHz?).
However, I also want to load latest Taito Type x games and Teknoparrot games and other nice emulators preferably at 31GHz.

Questions
1) Given the above what GPU do I get? I don't want to spend more than £100 - £150 if I can help it. (I don't want to spend £400 on a graphics card as I don't think its necessary - unless you can confirm otherwise hence budget of £100- £150 GBP)
2) If I get an AMD card, I understand that I can use the CRT Emudriver by Calamity - and get 15KHz with old MAME games - is that correct? How does this work on new latest games by Taito Type X and Teknoparrot? Does the resolution change to 31KHz if I wanted to select it? Or will it autoselect. (Remember, I have a Tri Sync monitor)
3) Checking other forums some people recommend Nvidia GT1030, however those individuals aren't taking into account that I have a CRT and the objective is to get old games looking good as a priority followed by playing the latest games after that.
4) Please help me select a card - Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 / AMD Radeon RX 560 4GB  - Any of those perhaps? Or What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Something like an R7 360 would certainly suit.  I bought one from these guys recently and it worked out fine. Even uses Atom15 just fine.

That's going to run games three years old at 480p ultra detail. Assuming the game will let you use that res.

Apologies for the extremely late response, manage to place an order at that time!
Thanks for the recommendation and response!

Probably could have bought a used 380x or 280x for that price

No, he couldn't have, two and a half years ago, in the middle of the GPU crisis :)
