Paradox Event - 4 player cocktail
« on: February 10, 2021, 11:36:23 am »
Started on a new project/game. Not sure if this will be a retro small screen game or a big 16x9 game.

This is going to be a 1vs1, 2vs2 and 4 player shooter.

Red vs. Blue

Looks like a pretty fun concept. And you're quality of work. I bet it'd be fun to play at a 4-player cocktail style cabinet.

Are you thinking of keeping graphics simple shapes, to match the pixel name? Or going to make some other sprites?

Agree a four player cocktail would be an excellent set up for this game 😎

Cool. Atari Combat meets Portal! Neat concept.
What are you writing it in?

Not sure, if I go for a 1920x1080 screen, I can make my tiles pretty hi-res. Maybe a sort of dungeon look.

Interesting concept. 4-player would be very cool.
Looking forward to seeing this come together.

I've decided to make the game in HD, so it will run on a big 1920x1080 screen. More fun for 4 players that way. So i'm trying a different look with a bit more detail.

The HD is a nice look. You do quality graphics work! I'm sure it will play really fun 4-players - a cabinet type I don't have but am starting to think would be nice more and more. They take up so much room though.

For anyone who wants to try, I would really appreciate some feedback on gameplay, gamebalance and any other suggestions. No start screen or game over screen yet, keys are configurable in game.ini

A custom domain! Someone is stepping things up a notch. My office blocks new domains but I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight.

It ran for me. I didn't play long though, long enough to move both characters around and shoot some stuff. Had to install .NET core on my Windows 10 machine but that was the only small bump.

Hi I gave it a go.
it crashed to a black screen on windows 10 after about 5 minutes of play.

That was probably the "Game Over" screen (after a player loses 3 lives) ;) I've uploaded a new version which just keeps playing.

The new version also introduces "paradoxes" (hence the name Paradox Event).

Every 30 or so seconds a bullet comes out of a portal without anyone shooting a bullet into the opposite portal, which is a paradox. To solve this players have to work together to shoot one bullet into the opposite portal to restore the timeline. If they don't succeed the timeline is disrupted and weird things will happen. I'm still thinking about what will happen. Maybe the whole game will crash, players start disappearing (like Marty Mcfly) or players just lose some points.

But the whole idea behind this, is that the game switches from player vs. player to a coop game every now and then.

I like the idea of occasional coop and occasional vs elements. That's what makes games like Balloon Fight and Joust so fun.
