MAME .201 hiscore plugin works for some games but not for puzzloop

I've been trying to get the highscore plugin working for Puzz Loop. It works for Puckman and Ms. Pac-Man, but puzzloop is listed in the hiscore.dat, so it seems like it should work, but I cannot get it to create a puzzloop.hi file, even though it creates those other files just fine.

Of course, Puzz Loop is the only game that my wife has ever battled for the high score. We could use save states, but it seems like it shouldn't be this difficult.

Any suggestions for further troubleshooting?
