Looking to build my first cabinet. Plans?
« on: August 13, 2020, 08:48:47 am »
Wondering if there's a good source for plans? Despite never doing woodworking or even anything really handsy, I want to give this a shot. Flatpacks or actual systems aren't close to me in Canada and I feel like I could literally screw up a cab 10 times before I reach the price a flat pack would cost.

I really like the cabinet made on "I Like To Make Stuff" but I don't really wanna pay $30 for plans. So I was wondering if there was a resource that had plans similar. I did pay $5 for the Geek Pub plans. His looked not bad so that is an option.

Thanks for any help. As I said I have no knowledge of woodworking so this will be an adventure.

If you want to build a cab with an LCD instead of a CRT, that would be the way to go. Bperkins is active here and he will help you out.

Here's the thing... don't buy plans.  In this hobby at least most people give away info freely.... in general people trying to charge for plans are outsiders to the community and ironically are going to give you less arcade accurate plans than the free ones.  This is in general of course, there are exceptions to the rule.  When in doubt ask around before you buy.

Definitely was planning for LCD over CRT just for ease of use. Thanks!

Really that bad? Oh no.

Hahah that is ... uhh interesting. I got the full size cab plans and they seem.. okay? I could be wrong though but I can at least read them as a beginner. I agree I shouldn't of paid though.

Thanks. Very good advice. I appreciate it.

Hahah ouch. I honestly didn't think the regular cab was that bad but now I'm interested to hear its flaws so I can make sure not to use anything similar.

I haven't kept up around here so I don't know if you can find them, but if you can search out the OND cabinet plans, they're extremely easy to follow. I had very little woodworking experiences before building my first one and had no problem. as of 3 years ago when I shut down my shop I think i was around 10-12 OND cabinets built.

I don't know if the stuff in that thread has been collated, but there's the thread that contains all that stuff.

Meh I bought $5 plans from Geek Pub a couple years ago and it worked out fine.  I had forgotten about this BYOAC site at the time and was looking for something quick to make a Christmas present.  Was able to buy all the parts and build it in like 3 days by having the plans and parts list.  It was my first experience with RetroPie and it ran great.  I even had Dragon's Lair running.  It didn't look like that dorky one posted it was like this one.
