Author Topic: PSU wiring question  (Read 1608 times)

PSU wiring question

Hey guys,

The ultimate I/o board comes with a 12v power cable for the LEDs. However, none of the power connections on my HP match the connector it came with.  So my plan is to cut the wires going to the DVD drive (since that obviously won't be used any more) and solder them to the provided connector.  I know the yellow is the 12V, but I have two questions:
1. Any forseeable issues with cutting a seemingly unused yellow wire and adjacent ground?
2. Both wires on the provided connector are black. Which is which?

No thats fine :)

Both blacks are ground, But I normally use the one next to it.

Did you mean that either black can be the ground? 
Also not sure what the "it" refers to in "the one next to it."

Wikipedia has the pinout for that computer-drive molex connector here.

Looks like those two pins would normally plug into 5v (pin 4) and ground. (pin 3)

You can move pin 4 to the pin 1 position to make it a 12v cable.
- Use ground from pin 3 or pin 2.  (That's what Titch meant by "Both blacks are ground", not the two wires in the pic you posted.)

If you meant to say that the power connectors on your HP are SATA power connectors, there are adapter cables like these.

Ah, Scott to the rescue again! Yes, based on what you posted I was able to go to Microcenter and pick up a SATA/Molex adapter. And I'm all set!

in --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- "molex to sata lose all your data"
