RI-3 cancels records before playing

Morning, can anyone please advise?  I have a Rowe RI-3. There is an intermittent problem.  It collects the selected record and places it onto the turntable, the stylus comes across but the record self cancels, occasionally it will play a few seconds and then cancel.  Please, please offer me some help.
