In 2020 Linux or Windows base for Arcade Monitor setup?
« on: March 08, 2020, 09:16:58 am »
So i have a new 15khz monitor and want to connect my dedicated PC which has a HD4670 that was flashed (ATOM-15) and had Crt Emudriver installed probably back in 2015 time (havent used this PC probably since then) i also have a J-PAC that will sit between the Monitor and PC to stop any nasty signals destroying my new monitor, so am want to connect this PC up to my new Monitor for some Arcade goodnes!!

I am unsure what the best approach is in 2020??, do i.....

  • basic Windows 10 install with GroovyMAME and a frontend of my choosing
  • install GroovyArcade OS
  • Another viable option??

Now one method uses Linux and the other Windows, is one regarded to be better than the other for this type of setup?
do i need to reflash my HD4670 and update CRT EmuDriver or if i selected GroovyArcade would this all do if for me?.
Is flashing a GPU with the ATOM-15 BIOS even needed now adays?

Im under the impression GroovyArcade is a one stop solution?. Is there anything else i need to take into consideration considering im using a J-PAC to filter out dangerous signals to the monitor?

Go with the cool guys and use linux instead of windows in 2020  8) :P.

  • Option A:. Self setup of windows or you could try the pre-baked ISO of  user Chunksin from http://www.ukvac.com/
  • Option B: See thread  "Collaborative effort for GroovyArcade". Substring, Doozer, Calimity and Ves are bringing GroovyArcade (based on arch linux) to the next level. Support them
  • Option C:  Raspberry PI with Pi2Jamma-Adapter and PinHP-Image
  • Option D: Mister FPGA with the arcade core and combine it with a JPAC (see youtube)

Once again,definately Option B  :P

Thanks for the reply.

I was under the impression that Linux (whereGM is concerned) had some issues or kinks that needed ironing out or didnt perform as well as GM does on Windows?

Of course there are always conspiracy theories around, just read the threads in the forum or take a loot at youtube ("input lag") etc .

No, really, from my "end user's" point of view I really can see  and feel that GroovyMame performs better than the other Mame versions (Mame, AdvMamce etc.) due to the frame_delay feature.
Also I feel no difference between Windows GM or Linux GM, but I also only play the classiss or 90ies Capcom / Midway Brawlers and Fighters.

So my suggestion is  => Go for GM at least and then you could test both platforms. I prefer Linux, cause Windows sucks  :P

Troll-esque topic, here is my point of view :

  • Windows: more emulators, more users, more support, nothing more to learn. It works. But quite a pain to setup
  • Linux: constantly evolving, has a learning curve for non linux users, but setting up groovyarcade is a breeze (for mame only I must say). Open source (anyone can help and contribute), some merry people developping it, will be almost as good as Windows in a little time, maintained, easily updatable.

That's more of a personnal choice and experience. Linux scares people, but Linux is quite powerful and can be customized pretty easily, so it can fit most needs.

Have you got a direct link to a thread about this? Tried searching but didn't get very far...
