Loud pop and screen spark when shutting off monitor.
« on: March 05, 2020, 01:28:07 pm »
Just checking to see if this is normal.  So whenever I flip the switch to turn off the monitor, I hear a loud pop and see a white spark on the screen (more like a bright flash of light).  There isnt a spark in the neck area and the monitor runs normal otherwise in fact the picture is awesome.  All the caps have been replaced and it was doing the same thing even with the old caps.  This is the first and only Arcade monitor that I have owned so just thought I would inquire if this was a normal thing.  Thanks.

CRT monitors do flash over when the power is cut due to the collapsing field in the flyback causing the high voltage to spike up... this voltage is dumped into the tube causing the white flash.

a loud pop on the other hand seems pretty abnormal. it's not uncommon for CRT's to have a staticy type of sound (small snaps and crackles) to them on startup or shutdown while all the electrons find equilibrium. not loud at all though. a loud pop is kind of unusual. it might be worth trying to track down where this poise is coming from.

you could have an issue developing inside your flyback in the screen/focus controls. that high voltage spike i mentioned before could also be arcing over inside the flyback. maybe turn off all the lights and kill the power to everything except the monitor...see if you can see anything unusual when you kill the monitor power.
