Will 5volt & 12 volt bulbs drain HD power?
« on: November 24, 2005, 07:42:59 am »
I have created a harness to hook into my hard drive power supply (yellow/black=12volts & red/black=5volts), which powers 1-12volt Happ Trackball light and 2-5volt Happ illuminated switches.  Will this set-up create a problem for my hard drive or should I be looking else where to steal power from?

that number of bulbs should not create a problem for a PC power supply

Yeah you will be fine. Some people power car amplifiers off theres as well as there PC etc, not that I would personally recommend it. If you are concerned or may power other devices in the future, you may want to add a seperate PSU but as far now you shouldn't have a problem.

PC power supplies are capable of powering quite a bit of extra equipment, especially on the 12v lines as modern hard drives / cd drives etc place very little demand on that line..

My own computer currently has a pair of 15" tft screens piggy backed off the computers 12v line (total of 8 Amps extra loading) with no problems
